After the party came the cleanup.
Following Friday night's Welcome America! concert and fireworks, workers gave the Ben Franklin Parkway a much-needed cleaning yesterday, then set about dismantling the stage and set.
As much of the city slept, a Streets Department crew of 50 workers used air blowers, mechanical brooms and hoses to remove the garbage left behind by the crowd of tens of thousands, said Frank Leo, the department's program administrator.
Yesterday afternoon, several dozen workers in hard hats methodically disassembled the metal platforms and pulled down the white tents used for the concert headlined by John Legend.
The workers used a rope-and-pulley system to carefully take apart two large scaffolding towers, each more than 50 feet high.
Three large moving trucks were parked nearby to help transport materials.
During Friday's show, the Streets Department used preemptive measures to keep the Parkway from getting too dirty. Twenty-five workers were on hand for some early cleaning, and 200 litter baskets and recycling bins were placed throughout the Parkway, Leo said.
Using past years as a guide, he estimated that 25 to 50 tons of garbage were picked up.
Lots of refuse - including half-eaten chicken pieces, broken beer bottles, and plastic utensils - remained spread over the Parkway yesterday afternoon.
Even though the Fourth of July had passed, the celebration did not stop.
Yesterday, the festivities moved to Penn's Landing.
Another cleanup was to follow.
