Now that the travels of Brett Myers have been chronicled ad infinitum, let's cut to the chase.
If the Phillies re-sign Brad Lidge - and they'll certainly give it their best shot - where will Myers land next season?
Lidge, acquired from the Houston Astros in November, will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Whatever it takes to sign him must be paid. The guy has been the most lights-out closer in Phillies history, and re-signing him is the club's top priority. And it's not even close.
So that leaves Myers in Allentown. The opening-day starter of the last two Aprils has made it clear his heart is not in starting but in closing.
He's saying all the right things about doing whatever is necessary to get back into sync as a starter and helping the team get to the World Series.
But he's also made it clear to anyone who asks that his future lies as a closer. Myers, who signed a three-year deal before the 2007 season, will be 28 next month.
And is a terrific commodity to dangle in a trade.
But first, the Phillies must sign Lidge.
Non-story of the week. Brett Favre is rumored to be coming out of retirement.
Non-story, Part II. Favre denies the rumor.
Prepare for a whole summer of this nonsense.
OMG. Shannen Doherty is about to sign up for the new version of Beverly Hills 90210 and - get this - may even appear in a scene with nemesis Jennie Garth.
Who'da figured?
Quotable. Mark Spitz won seven gold medals at Munich in 1972, a record that still stands.
For now. Michael Phelps, who won six golds in Athens in 2004, is considered a serious threat to tie or pass the record in Beijing next month.
Spitz says he won't mind at all.
"Let him have that monkey on his back for the next 25, 30, 35 years," Spitz told the Associated Press.
"It's not an easy thing. It's fun to answer to at first, but pretty soon that gets to be boring."
