Samples taken by the Health Department's Vector Control staff in the targeted area (near the band concert stage area bounded by Welsh Road, Cresco Avenue, Rhawn Street and Pennypack Creek) have shown adult mosquito populations that can potentially carry the West Nile virus.
The treatments, Anvil 2 + 2, will be administered via a truck-mounted vehicle spraying fine aerosol droplets. The mist stays aloft and kills mosquitoes on contact. Anvil 2 + 2, a synthetic pyrethroid, a product that has no residual effects, and evaporates quickly into the atmosphere. The synthetic pyrethoid, derived from the chrysanthemum flower, has no ill effects on human health. Spraying will begin at dusk if there is no rain.
There have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Pennsylvania this year. In 2007, there were no confirmed human cases in Philadelphia, and nine confirmed human cases in Pennsylvania.
