Philadelphia Orchestra departs Monday for 3-week Asia tour

The Philadelphia Orchestra leaves Monday for a three-week tour of China, Japan and Korea. Led by Christoph Eschenbach as he finishes his five-year tenure as music director, the orchestra performs in Beijing to mark the 35th anniversary of its historic 1973 trip to China. The tour includes first performances in Hyogo, Japan; and Guangzhou, China. The orchestra also returns to Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai. Soloists are violinist Midori in Japan, and pianist Lang Lang for concerts in China.

The tour begins an unusually busy travel schedule for the orchestra. After returning to Philadelphia from Asia for concerts in Verizon Hall and the Mann, the orchestra leaves for summer residencies in Vail and Saratoga. In the winter, the ensemble takes off again for a three-week tour that includes Vienna and the Canary Islands. Then, after more summer residencies in the U.S., the orchestra plays a series of European music festivals in August 2009.
