Uncle of Phila. police shooting suspect charged with carjacking

Philadelphia police have charged the uncle of the bank robber who shot and killed Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski with carjacking the Jeep that was used as the getaway vehicle.

Mitchell Cain, 49, of the 200 block of North 61st Street, was arrested Sunday after investigators determined he participated in the carjacking on Friday of a 2002 blue Jeep Liberty at 600 West Tusculum Street in North Philadelphia.

Cain is the uncle of Howard Cain, 34, who shot and killed Liczbinski after the robbery of a bank in Port Richmond on Saturday, police said. Howard Cain was later killed by police in a confrontation.

Like his nephew, Mitchell Cain has a long history of criminal violence, court records show.

In 1997, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 3 to 6 years in prison. He was originally charged with murder in the case.

He was granted parole in 2000, but was sent back to prison to serve the maximum sentence after a parole violation, said Leo Dunn, spokesman for the state Board of Probation and Parole.

The Jeep was used as the first getaway vehicle as Howard Cain, Levon T. Warner, 39, and Eric DeShann Floyd, 34, fled the Bank of America branch in the ShopRite on Aramingo Avenue.

The Jeep was ditched several blocks from where Liczbinski, 39, was shot and Cain got into Warner's Chrysler Town and Country minivan. The suspects were later cornered and Cain was shot by police. Warner was arrested.

Floyd remains a fugitive and there is a $150,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Mitchell Cain is charged with robbery, crajacking, firearms violations and related offenses.
