Animal-welfare officials were investigating the death of a dog whose burned body was found Tuesday afternoon in Fairmount Park in Strawberry Mansion.

The Pennsylvania SPCA said a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The male pit-bull-type dog had been wrapped in a blanket and set on fire, the SPCA said.

The FBI and Philadelphia Police were canvassing the area near Philadelphia International Airport looking for an object that was launched skyward Tuesday afternoon as a US Airways plane was landing.

Victoria Lupica, an airport spokeswoman, said the flight crew on US Airways Flight 4321 from Elmira, N.Y., reported seeing an object and a smoke trail near their plane as it was landing.

She emphasized that the object — which is presumed to have been a flare — did not hit the plane. Investigators said the flight crew saw the object when they were about 500 feet above the runway.

"There was absolutely no damage to the plane," Lupica said, adding that the plane landed safely. "We didn't close the airport; we were operational the entire time."

Diamond Street near 30th

A 30-year-old man was taken to Temple University Hospital after being shot five times Tuesday afternoon in Strawberry Mansion, police said.

The victim was shot twice in his left leg, twice in his right side and once in his chest, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police took the man to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Afterward, two witnesses were taken in to the Central Detective Division to be interviewed, Small said.

A detailed description of the shooter was not immediately available.

4? Man fatally shot in Kensington

Rorer Street near Cambria

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed early Tuesday in Kensington, police said.

Hit multiple times by gunfire about 1:10 a.m., the victim ran into his house on Rorer Street near Cambria and collapsed, police said.

Officers who responded to the shooting put the man in their patrol car and rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he died at 3:15 a.m.

Police said two men were seen running from the scene.

No word on a possible motive.

West End Avenue near Church, Trevose

A Bensalem Township man who found that his bank had mistakenly deposited $69,300 into his account surrendered Tuesday on charges that he spent most of the money.

Police said Joseph Bucci, 22, of Trevose, used the money to buy food, clothing, furniture, a vehicle, airline tickets and a dog.

Bucci was charged with theft and receiving stolen property, both third-degree felonies.

Police said Wells Fargo accidentally deposited the money in his account, but by the time the bank discovered the error, only $2,000 was left. Bucci was released on $25,000 unsecured bail. n
