A safe landing for Temple-Tokyo students

About 30 American students attending Temple University, Japan Campus flew from Tokyo to Hong Kong on Sunday on a charter flight that Temple arranged through International SOS.

Hillel Hoffman, Temple's spokesperson in Philadelphia, said that International SOS was now working with the students to arrange commercial flights from Hong Kong to their home destinations.

About 325 American students overall were enrolled fulltime at the campus in Tokyo when the earthquake and tsunami struck, Hoffman said. Most were full time undergraduates, though some were also study-abroad students.

About 190 of Temple's American students left the country on their own prior to Sunday's charter. Another 120 American students have chosen to stay in Japan, either in Tokyo or other parts of the country, he said.

Initially 50 students had signed up for the charter flight, but some chose not to take it.
