Seminar offered on sports-related concussions

POSTED: Friday, August 10, 2012, 3:03 PM

Vertex Fitness Personal Training Studio will host a seminar Sept. 16 aimed at increasing awareness of sports-related concussions.

The session will be at the New Leaf Club, 1225 Montrose Avenue, Rosemont. The seminar begins at 9 a.m. Doors open at 8 a.m. A $25 fee is suggested to reserve a seat for the seminar. Free parking is adjacent to the club building.

Background from seminar host: Given the reports from professional football players, claiming they have not been treated correctly when suffering head trauma, it is clear this injury can no longer be ignored. Serious discussion must take place about changes in how athletes condition themselves and how they can protect themselves from concussion-related injuries.

The seminar is aimed at coaches, referees and administrative personnel.

Leading off is Alexander R. Vacarro, MD., PhD., in his eighth year as spine physician for the Philadelphia Eagles. He will discuss what the body goes through on suffering a concussion, the biology of the human brain and what takes place when receiving a head-to-head blow.

Also speaking are Mark Asanovich and Ralph Cornwell Jr. Both are professional strength coaches working with athletes ranging from high school level to the National Football League. Asanovich has worked the past 15 years for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings.

Cornwell has over 20 years of experience with athletes in the NFL, MLB, and MLS and is a Ph.D candidate at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He will dwell on the importance of preparing for sporting events. The development of the neck and jaw muscles is key to this process.

Grants for the seminar are available. More information can be found at: www.ConcussionAwarenessSeminar.com.
