Lower Merion schools spokesman to scale Kilimanjaro
Doug Young, spokesman for the Lower Merion School District, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania next month.
He says Kilimanjaro - Africa's highest peak at 19,341 feet - is truly the trip of a lifetime.
But the climb is also a fund-raiser for Kujali International, a charity that partners with local communities in East Africa to help establish free and low-cost private schools for orphaned and vulnerable youth.
More than half of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are not only orphaned, but are living in extreme poverty on less than $1.25 a day, Young says.
Kujali co-founded the first free, private secondary boarding school in Mkuranga, Tanzania in 2007. Today, HOCET Secondary School provides a safe home and a high quality secondary education to 101 teens from throughout the country. The schooling is free.
Young says he will 13 climbers from around the world on August 5th to scale Kilimanjaro in a fund-raising "Climb for Kujali." “We'll also spend several days visiting with students and staff at HSS and volunteering at the school,” he says.
