Yards Brewing Company
In it's brief history, Yards has already had to expand twice. Yards began brewing in 1995 in a small 900 square foot building in Manayunk. In less than two years, high demand created the need to expand into a second facility in nearby Roxborough. The brewery now occupies a 40,000 square-foot building in the Port Richmond/Kensignton area of the city. It's the former bottling house of the old Weisbrod and Hess Oriental Brewing Company, which closed in 1939. Yards moved here in 2001.While the Greater Philadelphia region is home to several top breweries, including Yards, Flying Fish, Victory, Dogfish Head and Stoudt's, Yards is the only one located in the city proper. Good news for you since it's just a short cab ride from Center City.Yards hosts free tours of the brewery every Saturday between Noon and 3 p.m. The tours start in the tasting room, where you'll get to sample several varieties on tap.Yards produces five different beers year round, including Philadelphia Pale Ale (which the New York Times rated as one of the best pale ales in the country this summer), Extra Special Ale (which was Yards' first beer and is still a favorite among locals), India Pale Ale, Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale and General Washington Tavern Porter. Seasonally Yards brews Saison Belgian-inspired Summer Ale and Yards Love Stout.
