Pulling a rabbit out of a hat is just a trick. Pulling a back pack out of a wheel-aboard bag — now that’s magic. That’s what the wizards at Eagle Creek Luggage have conjured with the new Morphus International Wheeled Carry-On.
With one quick unzip, what had been a single 20.5-inch tall by 13.75-inch wide by 9-inch-deep roller bag with 1,709 cubic inches of packing space separates into a backpack with 2,135 cubic inches of space and a wheeled bag with 1,955. That’s nearly 2½ times the space you started with.
Both are made with tough polyurethane-coated polyester, are fully lined, and have top- and side-padded grab handles, double lockable zippers, and reinforced seams and contact points.
The wheeled bag has a hard but lightweight poly-carbonate frame and an open main compartment with compression straps and a large mesh zippered section. Thick treaded wheels are off-road ready, and a hinged kickstand keeps the bag upright.
The soft backpack has zip-away padded suspension back straps, a wide open main compartment and a zip-open organizer section with padded sleeves for a 15-inch laptop and a tablet, as a well as a nifty built-in cord winder, a key fob, and padded pouches for cell phones, battery packs, and other fragile electronics. Stash the back straps and slide the pack’s two trolley straps over the wheeled bag’s telescoping pull handle for piggy backing.
Zipped back together, the Morphus can be wheeled or carried by the backpack straps.
All this abracadabra doesn’t come cheap, but it’s a class act, even without the wand.
