CONNECTICUT Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Greater Hartford is March 15 at 11 a.m. from Capitol Avenue by the State Capitol building, and down Main, Asylum, and Ford Streets, ending by the historic Memorial Arch.

'Books in Bloom'

MARYLAND Local gardening pros dust off their trowels and shovels to create gardens inspired by popular books and novels as part of this year's "Books in Bloom" theme at the Maryland Home & Garden Show, which continues March 7-9 at the state fairgrounds in Timonium.

Boston blooms, too

MASSACHUSETTS The Boston Flower & Garden Show is March 12-16 at the Seaport World Trade Center. In addition to spectacular garden displays, it features lectures and demonstrations by top garden writers, industry experts, and creative local chefs.

NEW JERSEY The annual MidAtlantic National Cheer and Dance Championships are March 8-9 at the Wildwood Convention Center. The competition includes high school, recreation, and all-star divisions.

Centennial quilts

NEW YORK Grand Central Terminal marked its centennial in 2013 with many events, including a quilting competition to make commemorative quilts, using special fabrics, that exemplified what Grand Central means. The winners are on display at GCT March 15-July 6.

Quilts of honor

PENNSYLVANIA The fifth AQS QuiltWeek is March 12-15 at the Lancaster County Convention Center. It features displays - including the "Quilted in Honor" exhibit and a collection of miniature quilts from the National Quilt Museum - as well as workshops and lectures.

Building shelters

RHODE ISLAND In Middletown, it's a Family Outdoor Adventure: Building Shelters & Forts on March 8 at Norman Bird Sanctuary. Learn how to build shelters and forts in the yew forest and explore along the way. Appropriate for ages 4 and older.

VIRGINIA Jamestown Settlement's annual Military Through the Ages is March 15-16, with reenactors spanning centuries of military history and the Civil War 150 HistoryMobile.
