The Sexologist: Sex Week and why West Chester is the worst

If you come here regularly, you know that I run my sexology work, my feminist sex shop and education center, as well as my home base for writing sex columns and speaking and lecturing about sexuality, out of a small town called West Chester, PA. Outwardly, West Chester is a rad place- it’s a college town and has a bustling downtown community with lots of trendy bars, restaurants, and nightlife. There’s an active local music scene, film, and the arts. It’s a cool little spot.

But hidden under the surface, West Chester is actually the opposite of cool. If West Chester was a person, he would wear a sweater vest and remind the teacher she didn’t collect the homework. He would say “the google” and wear socks and shoes to the beach, then sit in the shade. West Chester is a square, in the truest sense. As Urban Dictionary defines it “A person who is regarded as dull, rigidly conventional, and out of touch with current trends.” That’s West Chester.

It’s certainly not all people. I mean, I’ve lived in West Chester for 5 years, and I’m not like this.  (That’s my way of saying, if you’re from West Chester and you’re not a part of the following list of grievances, don’t send me cranky emails because this doesn’t apply to you). But it’s enough people that the town has been a thorn in my side, and I have to contend with the squareness much more than I would care to.
