Six Flags Great Adventure is celebrating the debut of the first sea lion pup born at the Jackson, N.J., theme park, which bills itself as the world's largest.

Veterinary and animal care teams delivered the healthy male pup, Kona, June 25 at the Seafari Theater. Park officials on Wednesday released video footage of Kona taking a swim for the first time.

"Kona is becoming more proficient at swimming and has begun teething," senior animal training supervisor Jessica Peranteau said in a statement. "Similar to human babies, Kona puts anything in his mouth, most often his flippers."

Kona began using his flippers at four days old and has developed a signature call to communicate with his mother, Anoki, Peranteau said.

The park's fifth California sea lion, Kona has grown from 18 pounds to 33 pounds in one month.

Both the pup and his mother make daily appearances in the underwater viewing pool of the Seafari Theater in the park's Golden Kingdom section.
