Inquirer staff writer Liz Wagner reports:

New Jersey animal welfare officials are investigating the death of an explosives-detecting dog assigned to the Mount Holly Police Department.

The dog, Patton, died Tuesday, though its cause of death is unclear.

Matt Stanton, spokesman for the New Jersey SPCA, confirmed that the dog’s death is under active investigation, but would provide no further details.

Philthy, the irony between your name and comment is staggering. That's real tough talk from someone who lives behind the anonymity of the web.

what a stup*d comment Philthy. May the investigation prove what happened to this noble animal and may justice be served. Animals have assisted humans throughout history and the "least' we can do is respect and care for them. Say NO to animal abuse always.

The dog died because it was left in the car by its officer. Just terrible! It's considered murder to kill a police dog....this cop should get justice.

I saw another article at another news site that said the dog was left in the car for 2 hours. When they found him, they took him to an animal hospital but it was too late. Poor thing!
