Fireworks are fun, but they can be dangerous. Follow these tips to be sure your celebration stays safe:
AT PUBLIC FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
- Obey safety barriers around the firing site. Only trained operators should be near the site. Besides, you won't have a good view of the show from that close to the firing location.
- If you see an unexploded firework component on the ground, don't touch it. Instead, call the local police or fire department to handle it.
- Leave your pets at home when you attend a public fireworks show. The loud noise can hurt animals' sensitive ears.
- When you attend public fireworks, leave sparklers and other small legal fireworks at home. They're not appropriate - or safe - for use in large crowds.
FOR PERSONAL FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
- Never give fireworks to children. Adults should always supervise the use of fireworks.
- Use only legal devices. If you're unsure, call your local police department to find out what can be used in your area.
- Never try to make your own fireworks.
- Legal fireworks should come clearly labeled with instructions. Always read the instructions before setting off the fireworks, and follow them carefully.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby when lighting fireworks.
- Light one firework at a time.
- Always point fireworks away from people. Light them in an open area away from dry leaves, trash or anything else that can catch fire.
- If a firework seems to be a "dud," don't stand over it or attempt to relight it.
- Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water before discarding them.
- Store unused fireworks in a cool, dry place.
- If someone gets an eye injury from fireworks, don't rub the eye or attempt to wash it out. Seek immediate medical attention - call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
