Now That Fall is Really Here: My Top 5 Must Haves
Image 1 of 3
My No. 1 must-have item for fall. This one is from Kohl's. I want one in grey, chocolate brown and black!
Fall is here. It's really here. It's going to stay cold. It's getting dark early. Fall is here. Old man winter is close on her chunky heels.
So what does this mean about our fall wardrobe?
Well for one: no more bare legs. It's time for tights and when it comes to pantyhose, only the sheerest will do.
With the economy so miserable and dismal right now, what do we buy? What do we absolutely need for an updated fall look when money is soo tight. Here is my list. I was going to do 10, but I cut it down to five - I went grocery shopping yesterday. (UGH!!!)
Feel free to add pieces of your own.
1. A midi-length pencil skirt- a hemline longer than the knee, stopping at mid calf. I want one in chocolate brown, black and grey, but one might have to do.
2. A pair of knee-length wedge grey boots. (hotness!)
3 A white shirt, but not just any white shirt, this one should be architectural in nature. A funky collar. Maybe the sleeves should be puffy. (They have nice ones at Macy's.)
3. A pair of cuffed trouser pants.
4. A pair of wine, patent leather Mary Janes.
5. A pair of metallic tie up shoes with heels. (I'd like a matching oversized bag to match this...)
Ok, I had to add another few items. (I was trying to be good.)
6. A camel coat - with a hood and a belt
7. Tailored blazer
And of course, a dress, or two!
What do you think? What's on your fall fashion wish list?
Elizabeth:
This is not the first time that I see that you are writing about the midi-length pencil skirt. Unless I don't understand where such a skirt hits. If a skirt hits in the mid calf, even with opaques on, that spot is not flattering unless you are a twiggy model. Mid Calf on a lot women bulges out, and if this is the first part of your leg that you see from the hem of the skirt, then it is unflattering.
Please explain why you like this look so much, when it is really only for the ultra thin.
Lets see, for this fall, I am on the hunt for a pair of brown or burgundy high-heeled oxfords. I also need a new handbag since my favorite one (sigh) broke the other day. That one was perfect, a lovely shade of plum and could fit everything I need. I hate carrying more than one bag. I'd like to get a pair of Burberry rainboots, but the low kind, so I can wear them with non-skinny pants and I want them in pink. I'd also like a striped boyfriend/grandpa cardigan, something cute and casual. I knit and crochet, so I have a few projects I want to finish. I would like to make some more crochet tights and a black turtleneck sweater. Oh yeah, and a lovely cable knit sweater dress in the palest of blue is also on my list of fall/winter must-haves/must-makes. I'd really like that Juicy Couture faux-fur coat I saw at Neiman Markups, but that's a bit of stretch.
A cropped cardigan would be lovely. A pea coat paired with my trousers. A few unfussy dresses on days I need to look good but I don't have the energy to insist.
Dear rs05: I think the midi length skirt can be worn withpeople who have curves. A small waist helps, yes. But don't turn your nose up to the look if you are not Twiggy. Curves make the skirt look so much better. Try it.
"...old MAN winter close on HER chunky heels" is ridiculous writing. Man / her? Or, are we supposed to think Fall is a woman on chunky heels? A Sarah Palin reference for a fug jacket? Why be political?
Old-fashioned clothes...useless prose; TYPICAL of philly.com.
This fall, when we Regular Women are forced to dress up, are we supposed to wear leg-tinted sheer pantyhose, or sheer black, or those dang opaque tights? Tights make me feel like a 7-year-old, and I'm really a heavy 40something jeans-wearer.
Hi there Jenn, it really depends on what you are wearing. I say, get over the jeans and for the opaque tights with black skirts and dresses. It modernizes you rlook. It's a fashion choice you won't regret. And remember, black is slimming no matter how heavy you are (or think) you are.
I'll give the tights a try. I'm having that "if you're old enough to have worn it the LAST time around, you might be too old to wear it THIS time around" problem. How to look classic without looking like I stopped paying attention...
