A photo of Kate Gosselin making what appears to be an offensive, racist gesture made its way online Monday. The 38-year-old mother of eight, who's received immense backlash over the image, took to her blog Tuesday to defend and explain the story behind the offending photo, saying it's not what it seems.
The image shows the former reality TV star wearing a geisha-inspired headpiece while pulling the skin around her eyes to make them appear smaller. In other words, Gosselin looks like she's mocking Asians, though she claims the photo was distributed entirely out of context. While the origins of the image still remain unknown - Radar reports it was released via Twitter - Gosselin felt the need to defend her actions through her official website in a post titled "Photo..."
Gosselin writes, "I married an Asian. I have eight biracial children therefore I’m quite certain that I’m the last person that could be called a racist." She continues to explain that the photo, which was never intended to be shared online, was taken during happier days with her ex-husband, Jon Gosselin, while the two were "goofing off." She writes, "Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon — which often filled the garage of our Elizabethtown home — and when we opened this plastic Asian dress up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other. Naturally, I 'slanted' my eyes to show him my best Asian impression, which made him smile."
"I learned to cook Korean foods from Jon’s mom and grandmother," says Gosselin, who probably wanted this week to be all about her pending cookbook, Love Is in the Mix. "I couldn’t be more proud of my eight beautiful children and wouldn’t change anything about them or their heritage," she adds. "They are absolutely perfect just the way they are."
