Sidewalk sale Haddonfield's August sidewalk sale has taken place longer than organizer Remi Fortunato can remember. As the retail recruiter for the Partnership for Haddonfield, Fortunato estimated that the borough's end-of-season tradition dated at least to 1969, the first summer Jay West bridal salon was in business. The event always begins on the first Thursday of the month - which, said Fortunato, never seems to stop early birds from seeking deals Wednesday evening. The sale ends Sunday.

Haddonfield's August sidewalk sale has taken place longer than organizer Remi Fortunato can remember.

Merchants, mostly independent retailers, move discounted items outside to create "an outdoor bazaar," Fortunato said, adding that many stay open late. The event spans Ellis, Mechanic, and Tanner Streets; Haddy Lane; and North and South Haddon Avenue, but the sidewalk along East Kings Highway typically gets the most crowded.

Crowds are something Cathy Kaplan, owner of the recently relocated shelter-shop Home on Haddon, now at 9 Kings Highway E., is counting on. "We just had the craft show a couple of weeks ago. We opened the doors, and they just flooded in. I should have had more inventory," said Kaplan, who runs the business with her daughter, Olivia. Although Home on Haddon isn't reducing prices on its signature Annie Sloan chalk paint, Kaplan does plan to offer 10 percent off the entire store, and 30 percent off her own line of bright, hand-sewn pillows, bags, and aprons. "They're one-of-a-kind."
