A surprise model gives makeup class a chance to learn some A-list tips

There was a big surprise at the master class I attended in New York on Sunday featuring celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, whose clientele includes Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Gabrielle Union, Natasha Bedingfield and Michelle Williams.

His regular model couldn't make it, so none other than Kim Kardashian stepped in to lend a hand - and her fabulous face. Mario's been her makeup artist for seven years.

Mario showed us how to create one of the most requested and iconic looks in beauty - "the Kim K. Glam." I have to add that Kim was gorgeous without makeup. OK, she had some darkness under the eyes, but don't we all?

Mario said that a typical celebrity makeup session can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours, depending on how much time the client gives him. Here are some of his tips:

Face:A smooth foundation application is key, so Mario takes time blending products. Contouring is important to frame and warm the face. Highlighting brings certain features forward and makes everything look more natural. Powder is essential to set makeup so it lasts longer. Blush is usually kept soft and natural.

Eyebrows: Fill them in but keep them natural-looking.

Eyes: For brown eyes like Kim's, use soft golds, champagnes and earthy tones. As for eyelashes, Kim told us she rarely wears faux - those long lashes are hers, enhanced with mascara.

Lips: Kim likes a classic nude lip. To make them appear more full, line lips with a natural brown liner and put lighter nude lipstick in the center. Add a touch of gloss.
