Transform regular glass votive holders or ordinary glasses into festive lighting or party favors with this simple DIY craft. This inexpensive craft uses simple products like ModgePodge and gel food coloring to make ordinary glasses into a fun and colorful votive.
First you need to find some inexpensive glasses or votive holders from your craft store, dollar store or even big box store. You can find them for under a dollar at most places. Also pick up a large bag of white tea lights, they come in a bag of 50 for under $3. (Told you this was an inexpensive craft!) Depending on how many votive candles you plan on making you will want to buy a good size jar of ModgePodge and gel food coloring in the colors you wish to create these adorable painted votive.
Simply mix 1/2 cup of ModgePodge, with 1 tsp of water and enough food coloring to acquire the color you are looking for. Remember it will darken up slightly after it bakes. I was worried these would not work or be very light based on the pastel green colored I created below. This amount filled 3 glasses that were 10 and 14 oz each.
Pour the mixture into a clean jar or glass, ( these were 14 oz glasses) and swirl the color around to cover the entire interior of the glass.
Place the glasses upside down on a cooling rack, make sure you have parchment or newspaper underneath to catch all the excess.Allow to dry this way for 45 minutes.
Place the glasses upside right onto a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper and place them in an oven heated to 200 degrees F. Check on them every 15-20 minutes and remove them once they are translucent like the photo above. There might be a little bubbling at the bottom but as long as it is try it is ready to come out.
Allow to cool on a baking rack and then either place around your home with a votive inside or package them as gifts. I used a cellophane bag and some festive ribbon. I know my girlfriends will find somewhere special to display this party favor for the holiday season! Have fun and make several different colored votive for a dramatic table scape.
