U.S. ski champ wins adorable four-legged prize

It’s enough to make you want to take up pro skiing. Just in time for the holidays, World Cup slalom ski champion Mikaela Shiffrin won an adorable prize: a baby reindeer named Rudolf!

“Who wouldn’t want to get a reindeer? I remember being five years old and ‘Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ was my favorite song,” Shiffrin, 18, told the official World Cup site.

Though she doesn’t actually get to take Rudolf home, the baby reindeer will be cared for at the Ounaskievari Reindeer Farm, and Shiffrin can receive updates on Rudolf’s growth and visit him when she’s back in Finland.

“I scared him off a bit when I jumped off the podium to meet him, but I think we will be getting along,” Shiffrin said. “I hope that when he gets older and trained I can go for a ride on a sledge with him.”

This year’s male slalom champion, Marcel Hirscher, also won a baby reindeer.

“I talked to my girlfriend about what to name it if I win, and we agreed it would be kind of cool if we named it after my dad,” he said. “So his name will be Ferdinand, but we might call it Ferdi to shorten it up.”

What a great early Christmas present!

While we’re in a reindeer mood, check out this unbelievably adorable video of a baby reindeer taking its first wobbly steps:
