Photos of a little boy snuggling with his adorable puppy have melted hearts around the world this week.
It all started when mom Jessica Shyba began posting Instagram photos of her nearly 2-year-old son napping with their new rescue puppy, Theo.
Shyba and her family adopted Theo at 7 weeks old from the Santa Cruz SPCA. “Big Bird—as he was named at the shelter—was the shyest of them all to meet us, though he bounded instantly into Beau’s lap as soon as he entered their pen,” Shyba writes on her website. “The look on his furry little face was enough to seal the deal for me…we had met our newest family member.”
She said that at first, they planned to crate train Theo, meaning he would spend his night on a “snuggly bed” in an indoor pen. But the puppy’s whimpering became unbearable, and Shyba relented and let Theo sleep in her bed.
On his third day with the family, Theo fell asleep on top her son Beau as he dozed off for his afternoon nap—and a beautiful friendship was born.
“Each day, Theo meets us at naptime and waits patiently for Beau to fall asleep. By that time, he’s also sleepy, so when I hoist him onto our bed, he stumbles over to Beau and plops right down on top of him. And there they sleep, entwined, for at least two hours.”
Loving mom Shyba described their napping ritual as “the most organic and beautiful friendship I have ever witnessed.” Within days, her photos of their sweet friendship had gone viral, and the story of Theo and Beau has caught the attention of the Today show, Ellen DeGeneres, Good Morning America, and dozens of news sites and blogs.
