Parishes long known for their cultural influences

Port Richmond is famed for Catholic parishes formed by different immigrant groups. On Allegheny Avenue, at Thompson Street, St. Adalbert's Church still has two masses in Polish and two in English every Sunday, a church secretary said.

On Allegheny Avenue, at Thompson Street, St. Adalbert's Church still has two masses in Polish and two in English every Sunday, a church secretary said.

A little farther north on Allegheny, at Belgrade Street, Nativity B.V.M. was traditionally for Irish Catholics. And a block from there, on Allegheny at Gaul, Our Lady Help of Christians was built for German immigrants.

School closings aren't new to Port Richmond. Just last year, the 2008-09 school year, the three elementary parish schools of St. Adalbert's, Nativity and Our Lady Help of Christians merged to form the new Our Lady of Port Richmond Regional School. It operates in the former St. Adalbert's parish school, Thompson Street at Madison.
