“That position has already been filled. You were not one of those selected to be interviewed.” That’s the bad news a jobseeker doesn’t want to hear when he follows up on a résumé he sent or an interview he completed. So what is a jobseeker to do when he gets bad news?

  • Don’t argue. Avoid asking, “Why didn’t I get the job?” You are not likely to get a specific answer, anyway. If you argue, you will turn off this employer for good. Instead, try to make the person your ally.
  • Thank the person for something – if nothing else than considering you for a job. That will help turn a negative into a positive.
  • Ask about future openings. “Will I be considered for future openings?” “How long will you be keeping my résumé?”
  • Ask about other openings. “Are there any other jobs with your company that I might be better suited for?”
  • Ask for leads. “Could you suggest some other company that may be interested in someone with my qualifications?” I have seen disappointed applicants use this tactic and turn it into a job.
  • Ask for help. “Is there some way you would suggest how I could better market my qualifications?”
