I once walked out of a convenience store where I went to order a sandwich and discovered they'd replaced my friendly counter clerk with a self-service touch screen. I can identify with jobseekers who arrive at an employer prepared to interact with humans and panic when they are pointed to a kiosk. On the bright side, computers are a plus to those of us with poor handwriting.
Here are some points to keep in mind when filling out paperless applications:
- The computers provide step-by-step instructions. Often, there are phones right in the kiosk that will connect you with someone qualified to help. It's better than interrupting an employee who has other things to do.
- The computer can alert you to mistakes that are easy to correct. With paper, you might miss them, or have to fill out a new form.
- Allow enough time to complete the application. Sometimes, companies will provide the average completion time for applying via kiosk.
- Bring a résumé, work history, references or fact sheet with you so you can keep all your facts straight and at your fingertips. Don't improvise your way through a kiosk application.
- Answer all questions completely and accurately. Double check spelling and accuracy.
- Be prepared for an interview. Kiosks are designed to alert a manager if an applicant has the desired qualities.
