How Twitter can help in your job search

Using social media can either hurt you or help you in your career, but if you know how to use it the right way it may benefit you in landing a job.

Knowing exactly what to say in 140 characters or less, or realizing the importance of a ”retweet” may be tricky sometimes, especially not knowing where to draw the line between your professional and personal lives.

With all of the social media out there today, reports suggest to professionally use one networking site in depth to really establish your brand so it doesn’t become too overwhelming.

For Twitter, usnews.com offers three simple tips for how to maximize your Twitter presence to help you in your job search. For those who haven’t created accounts yet or want to create a new professional account, the article states that users should create their Twitter handle – at 15 characters or less – that emphasizes your value.

This could just be just your name if it goes along with your brand, for example, a well-known writer. But in other cases, the article states, you’re username should represent what you do. One of the examples the article gives is @ValueIntoWords, which is the handle for a certified master resume writer.

Once your Twitter handle is created, the article suggests to search your colleagues on Twitter and to start following them and some of their followers. Start “retweeting” some of their tweets, and create your own introduction to some of the tweets when you share them. The article says this will test your writing and editing skills because you’ll have to cut the original tweet down to fit it into 140 characters.

The report suggests to then start writing your own tweets and offer helpful tips in your chosen field. If you have a personal blog you should also link to your own posts.

Following these steps will allow potential job seekers to see more of what you have to offer and can really work to your benefit during your job search.
