How Instagram can help you find a job
Finding a job through social media is common these days. More jobseekers are turning to LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook for help with the job search and to connect with prospective employers.
But now experts are saying Instagram – the popular picture-sharing service that launched in October 2010 – is a way that applicants can find jobs as well.
Jim Stroud, the Director of Sourcing and Social Strategy at Bernard Hodes Group, offers some insight on career website Glassdoor.com about how this social networking app – which has 130 million active users – can serve as a powerful jobseeking tool.
Stroud recommends users should first create a secondary account so that they appear professional. This way, personal pictures that you may not want your prospective employer to see won’t be an issue.
When creating a username you should either use your full name, or your name and your profession, he suggests.
Use the bio section to explain who you are and the type of work that you do. “When you do this, make sure that it is compelling and something that would be attractive to the people you are targeting,” Stroud says.
Once your profile is complete, you can start adding professional photos and videos. Stroud suggests including photos of you working, pictures of companies where you have worked, photos of conferences or events you have attended, and videos of you demonstrating a skill.
Then it’s time to start networking! Follow the companies you want to work for, as well as the people who you would want to work with. Network with them by liking their photos and leaving comments, Stroud says.
Pay attention to the hashtags that the companies and employees are using, and start using them. “This will help you get discovered by the people who work there,” Stroud says.
