So it came as little surprise that the 17-year-old has already decided on taking the next big step in his budding basketball career.
Yesterday, the 6-1, 175-pound junior made a verbal commitment to Wake Forest, calling the school his "top choice," forgoing interest from Indiana, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Saint Joseph's, Memphis and Villanova - his second choice had he decided to stay local - according to Neumann assistant coach John Mosco.
"This is not only a great day for Tony, but also a great day for the school," Mosco said. "Committing this early will only keep him focused and that's what we need him to be."
As a sophomore, Chennault averaged 15.5 points per game and dished out 3.9 assists. He also averaged four rebounds per game. But his freshman year was arguably his breakout season, as he is best remembered for an overtime three-pointer that gave Neumann a win over DeMatha (Md.) High, which at the time boasted a top-10 national ranking.
"I'll never forget when he hit that three-point shot in OT to beat DeMatha his freshman year," said Mosco. "People couldn't believe he took that shot but that's just the kind of kid he is. Fearless."
It's been a busy summer for Chennault, who is currently playing AAU ball in addition to participating in the Hank Gathers College Division of the Sonny Hill League. In school, Chennault has a 2.8 GPA, citing his last report card as one loaded with A's and B's.
"I brought home a lot of game film and I am really trying to work on my flaws [in preparation for the upcoming season]," Chennault said. "I feel blessed and really lucky [to have the chance to commit to Wake Forest]. I like the way they play [at Wake] and they really let the point guard run the show there. I like that and I feel that's the best situation for a player like me." *
