The Day at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - We found something yesterday that irks Eagles coach Andy Reid more than stupid penalties, dropped passes and lopsided losses.

Reid stared daggers into the morning sky when a Fox29 news helicopter loudly intervened during the team's practice at Lehigh University. The coach was disturbed by the chopper as soon as it hovered above the Goodman Campus, but his blood pressure soared when the pilot buzzed by 50 yards off the ground on an adjacent field to the one where the Eagles were practicing.

The helicopter visit was part of an Eagles marketing campaign, but Reid was not pleased with the timing, or the fact he had not been informed about it.

Cornerback Sheldon Brown said he also was bothered by the unexpected visit.

"I don't know if he didn't like it, but I didn't like it," Brown said. "You don't know what's flying over, and there's a lot of weird stuff going on in the world today. It was kind of low, and I had never seen a helicopter fly that low over the field."

McNabb remains sharp

Quarterback Donovan McNabb has had a terrific training camp throwing the football and yesterday might have been his most impressive effort of all.

"He's throwing the ball down the field very well," running back Brian Westbrook said. "He's just being Donovan McNabb."

McNabb's most impressive deep throw was a 50-yard hook up with rookie receiver DeSean Jackson, who had beaten cornerback Therrian Fontenot by a couple steps.

Moments later, the quarterback hit receiver Bam Childress for a 35-yard completion, even though the receiver was tightly covered by Quintin Mikell.

McNabb's best work of the morning might have come when the defense went to a nickel formation. The quarterback made two quick reads for completions to Brian Westbrook and L.J. Smith.

It's a good sign if . . .

You're little-known receiver Frantz Hardy and you make a nice sliding catch on a throw by quarterback A.J. Feeley.

You're strong-side linebacker Chris Gocong and you have tight coverage on a down-the-field throw to Brent Celek.

It's a bad sign if . . .

You're running back Ryan Moats and you juggle the football after it's punched loose by rookie safety Quintin Demps.

You're weakside linebacker Omar Gaither and you let Brian Westbrook slip behind you for a pass completion from Donovan McNabb.

Practice is closed

The Eagles will conduct a mock game at 10:30 a.m. today in preparation for tomorrow's exhibition opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. The practice is closed to the public. The next public workout at Lehigh will be Sunday at 8:15 a.m.
