Elton John - Billy Joel concert sells out

Billy Joel and Elton John's Face 2 Face concert at Citizens Bank Park, home of the World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, on July 30 sold out via ComcastTIX in 12 minutes.

Both John and Joel launched their first-ever tour in Philadelphia, PA, at the former Veterans Stadium with three sold-out shows in July of 1994. The duo also performed a record-tying six-night run at the Wachovia Center in 2002, the most shows by any act during one tour at the Philadelphia venue. In addition, their six night run is the most by the duo at any venue in the world.

Both John and Joel have a rich history in Philadelphia. Joel first broke through the radio airwaves on WMMR (93.3 FM) when he performed a live broadcast from Sigma Sound Studios on April 15, 1972. While performing a then unknown “Captain Jack,” the station would later rebroadcast the track due to overwhelmingly popular demand. As one of the first radio stations in the country to play the song, Joel became an instant hit in Philadelphia, which helped launch his career.

John penned one of his most popular songs, “Philadelphia Freedom,” for his friend Billie Jean King who played tennis at the Spectrum for the Philadelphia Freedoms. John often attended games at the legendary arena and, in fact, played a match against comedian Bill Cosby, a Philadelphia native.
