Toys for Tots needs 40,000 toys by Monday

The Philadelphia-area Toys for Tots program is making a desperate push to collect 40,000 toys by Monday to ensure every underprivileged child on its list will not be left wanting on Christmas morning.

The program, which is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, only has about 6,000 toys in its warehouse, far short of what it needs.

The situation at Toys for Tots is mirrored at other charity programs where an increase in requests for toys and a reduction in donations reflect the economic troubles of past year.

Donation sites are located throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey, including the Philadelphia Inquirer Building at 400 N. Broad Street and the Philadelphia Newspapers printing plant at 800 River Road, West Conshohocken.
