THOMAS: EAGLES HAVEN'T SHOWN ANY INTEREST; SHAWN SPRINGS VISITING BIRDS

POSTED: Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 5:14 PM

Tra Thomas left Jacksonville without a contract, but he showed zero optimism today when asked if he still thought there was a chance he'd return to the Eagles next season.

"They haven't shown any interest in bringing me back, so as hard as it is I have to move forward," Thomas said via text message. "The Eagles have always been the team I wanted to play for, but now I have to go to the team that wants me."

Thomas, who returned to his South Jersey home to celebrate one of his son's birthdays tomorrow, didn't say if the Jaguars would be that team, but Jacksonville is the only place he has visited thus far. It's also roughly 100 miles from his boyhood home in Deland, Fla.

The Eagles also announced that veteran cornerback Shawn Springs has arrived in town for a visit with the team. Springs, 33, has played the last five seasons with the Washington Redskins, but was released by the team Saturday as part of a salary-cap purge. He had 12 interceptions in his five seasons with the Redskins.

Several team sources indicated that there's a decent chance Springs leaves Philadelphia without signing a deal.

Shawn Springs?? Wow!! I'm impressed! Let's make sure we don't break the bank on this deal! We want to save some money for the other big timers we're bringing in!! I understand that the Eagles philosophy is spend money on both lines and the secondary, but have we ever signed a free agent (of significance) under Andy Reid that wasn't either an O-lineman, D-lineman, or corner?? I get the whole "the game is won in the trenches" theory, but it obviously doesn't apply to us. Just curious. And T.O. wasn't a free agent, so give me someone else.

Along with a salary cap ceiling, there is also an NFL salary cap floor (85.2% of cap ceiling). I've heard that the Eagles are $20 million+ UNDER the cap floor. They need to start spending soon to get above that floor. Either they're planning on doing something big in the draft (like overpaying for unproven players) or they're being stupid and will waste it on overpaying someone they already have by restructuring contracts (i.e. McNabb's) to meet the cap floor. We'll see what the Eagles will do.

"All the sudden people love the players that lost 4 out of 5 nfc title games". Now that's about the most sane thing 've seen posted on here in a while. Couldn't agree more. Don't forget that no one ever thought we had the team capable of even getting to the Super Bowl let alone winning it. Most if not all of you left them for dead a few games into the season.

you people act like any franchise has loyalty. Look what the 49ers did to Jerry rice, Joe Montana and Ronnie lott and those guys won the SB. Get over yourselves and realize that what the eagles are doing might not be popular because we all loved Dawk, Tra and Runyan but they never won and are getting old. Would I love to see them retire as Eagles HELL YES, but it doesn't work like that.

mikep, are you howard eskin? Eagles made no fair offers to Dawkins and probably not to Thomas. They told Dawkins this was all he would get at age 36. Not if he could play, just that was their offer, take it or leave it. Thanks for 13 great years, now don't let the door hit you on the way out. Listen to Dawkins' interview on 950. Banner said the Birds can't keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect anything different. Yet, he's doing the same thing over and over again. These guys don't want to win, just be in the running every year so the fans will keep buying tickets and jerseys. Suckers.

Eagles fans are such dirtballs who hang out at places like "Pat's Cafe" and wear their Andre Water' jerseys. They need to get a clue and realize that they care about making money and if they win along the way...so be it. I say that as Lurie said "They're going pedal to the metal".

As for Montana, Rice, Lott. They were all pretty much done. If the Birds were so close to getting to the Super Bowl last season, why are they not getting the players that will put them in it? No backup to Westbrook. No left tackle, an injured new right tackle. No backup tight end. Untested defensive backfield players. With Reid's track record, do you think they are going to get immediate help through the draft?

lets see--they went into 2007 without a punt returner--it cost them 2 games-went into 2008 without a FB-it cost them at least 2 games-this year-without an experienced LT-does anyone know what this team is thinking? it sure is hell isn't to win a Championship.

If you don't like Reid and Banner maybe you'd prefer Kotite and Braman. Reid can be frustrating, but the Eagle have had their best run ever under him. Reid's stubbornness is what makes him frustrating, but it is also his strength, that he has a plan and sticks to it without giving it to the ebb and flow of popular sentiment. I trust him to build and rebuild the team, and the Eagles need rebuilding. Now, if the team starts to consistently lose for several seasons, then Reid should go.
