SEPTA bus driver attacked on route

A SEPTA bus driver was brutally assaulted early Sunday morning as he drove his route from Port Richmond to Strawberry Mansion.

About 1:10 a.m. near the intersection of 22nd and Lehigh, two unknown men attacked the driver and fled. The driver was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"We don't know what prompted the attack," said spokeswoman Kristin Geiger.  "There's no indication that it was a robbery."

About 90 percent of SEPTA's fleet are outfitted with cameras. Unfortunately, the Route 54 bus, a long "articulated" vehicle, is among the 10 percent without electronic surveillance.

"They are part of the fleet we'll be replacing later this year," Geiger said.

The incident remains under investigation.
