Philadelphia police say they shot and killed a man who engaged them in a "violent" struggle after he was asked to stop while riding a bike at 61st and Arch Streets late last night.
The man, 35, of West Philly, has not yet been identified by police pending notification of relatives.
Police spokesman Lt. John Stanford gave this account of the shooting:
Officers were in the area of 61st and Arch at approximately 11:45 p.m. when they saw a man riding a bicycle. They attempted to stop him in relation to an incident earlier in the night. Police did not provide details of that incident, or say if they believe the man was actually involved in it.
Regardless, the man fled and fell off the bike as it went between two parked cars. One of the officers saw the man brandishing a handgun when he stood and "a violent struggle" ensued. Two officers tried to wrest the gun from the man.
"The male wouldn’t release control of the gun," Stanford said. "At that point, one of the officers discharged his weapon three times, striking the male. It was a violent struggle over the weapon. The suspect still had control of the weapon.
Stanford said a loaded, 45-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police are still investigating the shooting.
