Inquirer staff writer Sam Wood reports:

A Philadelphia police officer was injured this morning after his cruiser was broadsided by a car that had run a stop sign in Northeast Philadelphia.

The officer, whose name has not been released by authorities, was responding to a call at 1:45 a.m. when his vehicle was struck at Wakeling and Saul Streets in the city’s Frankford section.

Initial reports stated the driver who hit the cruiser may have been intoxicated.

A similar crash on Monday night killed Philadelphia police Sgt. Timothy Simpson.

Check back with philly.com later this morning for further details on the collision.

maybe it's time to do something about all these drunk drivers.

Maybe it's time for Philly to start enforcing traffic laws. You reap what you sow. If you don't enforce the laws, people do what they want. Eventually, it will come full cirlce and cops will get into crashes.

I agree with jbl33.. Since when do Philly police not enforce traffic laws? Babiesmakinbabies and chrissmith, seriously, what a moronic statement. First off, they do enforce traffic laws... Being the fact that Philly is a large city other types of crime do occur in it, such as, shootings, robberies etc. I wouldn't go so far to say that the Philadelphia Police do not enforce traffic laws.. That's ignorant on your part.

Poor officers - they have so much to deal with already. I really sympathize with them. What job does anyone of us have that has so many occupational hazards? D**n drunks and addicts should be locked up and have the key thrown away.

Chrissmith..... cops do enforce traffic laws....do you not remember Officer McDonald who was killed over a traffic stop, yet all the people kept saying why do cops harass people over traffic stops.....THIS IS WHY!

i'm curious if the drunk driver was another idiot from outside philly coming here to buy drugs or party? anyone who lives right off of 95 (like myself) should be afraid. because these druggies have to cut through our neighborhood to get to the badlands to buy their dope and then come back through after their high to get home.

At 1:45am which means more than likely they just left a bar. They should find the bar and charge them along with the driver for allowing that person to leave and then drive. Or they should have people who are assigned to bars or around the them at closing time and charge anyone who gets into a car and drives. Bars and those who serve the drinks need to start taking a accountable role in the aftermath of just keeping them coming.
