Off-duty Philly officer shot and killed

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot and killed this morning in North Philadelphia as he was coming home from work, according to police.

The officer's name has not been released yet, pending notification from relatives. Police commissioner Charles Ramsey said the officer was walking home just before 6 a.m. today when he apparently encountered a suspect with a gun. Ramsey said he did not know the details of the fatal encounter at about 20th and C.B. Moore streets. But the officer was found on the ground with his gun drawn. Ramsey said he did not know if the officer had fired any shots. The officer was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital.
