Mayor Nutter has a new ride. And it's friendly to the environment.

Nutter is now being chauffeured around in a Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. He got the brand new hybrid SUV last Thursday.

Nutter said he heard about this vehicle last fall and contacted Chevrolet. He said he wanted to drive a hybrid -- which use more than one fuel source and save on gasoline -- to set an example.

"I think increasingly in government we're going to have to provide that kind of leadership," Nutter said.

Nutter said that his mayoral campaign committee paid for the car and donated it to the city. According to Chevrolet's website, the Tahoe Hybrid starts at $50,490.

"I wanted to purchase a vehicle, donate it to the city," said Nutter, who never took a city car during his years as a councilman.

The car got its first test on Friday, after the overnight snowstorm. Nutter had to drop daughter Olivia off at Masterman, where she is a 7th-grader, before coming to work. They made it in just fine.

The man needs some room for him and his departmental staff. Kudos to Mayor Nutter!!! Too bad it took so long for Philly to get someone this good in office.

A $50,000 hybrid? America just doesn't get it. A 20 mile a gallon Tahoe doesn't do anything for the environment.

Not green enough. I understand its an SUV but a 23mpg city? Thats horrendous......a hybrid SUV is supposed to give you an average of 35mpg city. I think GM and Ford needs to rethink their hybrid ideas and work on it, if they want to beat the foreign car companies.

At least he isn't driving a Prius that is manufactured overseas and costs as much environmentally to ship to the US as it does to drive and non-hybrid vehicle manufactured in the US.

Nutjob how about a smaller hybrid? Try us made Toyota Highlanded, if you had to have an SUV. It will get 20 rather than 8 mpg. Same old stupid mayor.

Nutter first you sell out the voters by endorsing Hillary. Keep in mind "MIKE" the same voters that voted you in as the "change" cadidate are now supporting Obama nationally. Don't think it will be forgotten how you turned your back on us and forgot your roots so effortlessly and quickly. Back to my inital point first you sold out your voters now you sell out your Greenness. Come "MIKE" a 50k SUV Hybrid give me a break. SELL OUT
