Mayor Nutter just announced that concerts will be held at city recreation centers on Thursdays throughout July and August, to replace the summer shows traditionally held at the Robin Hood Dell East.

That series will conclude with an "Old School Jam Session" on Sept. 1 featuring the Sugarhill Gang. You may remember Nutter performing their hit "Rapper's Delight" at his victory party.

Asked if he would perform with the group, Nutter joked "my agent is in conversations with their people and we have to see if we can work something out."

Nutter also said four films will be screened in the City Hall courtyard in July and August. They are: "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" (July 11), "Italian Job" (July 25), "Unbreakable" (August 15), "Invincible" (August 29).

This sounds like fun. But walking to and from, will be a real challenge.

We'll do our best to attend at least one show; I think this is a great initiative to help further the sense of community amongst Philadelphians and overall pride in the city.

How can getting there be a "real challenge"? City Hall is a subway stop! And it seems like half the buses in this city go right around City Hall. Nothing could be more convenient.

Great idea, kinda similar to the summer movie viewings in Bryant Park in Manhattan. Anything to increase the usage of the public space at City Hall besides homeless people I'm on board with.
