Tonight, it is Eagles vs. Browns.

Tomorrow, it is Phillies vs. Eagles.

It will be a good old-fashioned war for the sports pages (and internet hit counters) tomorrow as the Phillies unleashed a barage of news today in advance of the Eagles' Monday night showdown with the Browns. Make sure to monitor all the progress here on Philly.com live throughout the day tomorrow, courtesy of the "Most Viewed" stories box on the right hand of your screen.

Maybe I'm getting a little too excited about this. Regardless, here's what has transpired today on the Phillies front:

1) First and foremost, the Phillies have agreed with Jamie Moyer on a new two-year contract. What took so long? Moyer wanted two years. The Phillies were hesitant about going beyond one. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. was candid about that hesitation throughout the offseason, and he admitted this afternoon that giving a 46-year-old pitcher two years guaranteed pretty much goes against every rule in the Physiology of Baseball book. But Moyer is a special case, not just because of his performance - he led the Phillies with 16 wins in 2008 and pitched very well in the World Series - but because of what he brings to the clubhouse.

"There's no question it was a concern and for us to go two years guaranteed shows one, our committment to him," Amaro said, "but also he's probably one of the best-conditioned athletes that we have and his dedication to his craft is as high as anybody's on this club. Jamie is going to do what he can to play out this contract and be an effective pitcher for us. We have reason to believe that with the way he works and the way he pitches that he can do just that."

I rationalize like this: when you are paying for Moyer, you aren't just paying for a pitcher, you are almost paying for another coach because of the amount of experience he brings to the clubhouse and to the pitching staff. With young hurlers like Kyle Kendrick, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco and Andrew Carpenter on the way up, there is no underestimating the value of having a guy like Moyer around.

"I think we have one of the best clubhouses in all of baseball," Amaro said. "These are players - we had one up here today (in Utley) - who are dedicated to winning. . .Jamie certainly represents that. You talk about his presence in the clubhouse. He's been through so much over the course of his career, it's inevitable that he is going to be able to provide some of the information that will be very important for our young players and even older players that we acquire who have to make adjustments in their careers, which Jamie has done. He is an invaluable players to us and an invaluable person and we are pleased to have him back."

2) I asked you guys last night to throw out some questions for Chase Utley, who met the press for the first time since his hip surgery three-and-a-half weeks ago, and he pretty much answered all of them at one point or another in the press conference. Utley said he is hopeful to return as soon as possible, but it sounds like both he and the Phillies are going to approach his rehab with caution. Both Utley and Scott Sheridan were asked several different ways whether they thought the second baseman would be ready by Opening Day, and every time they answered with a generic "If all goes well. . ." type of response. In short, it is way too early to tell when, exactly, Utley will be back. But everything has gone smoothly thus far, and there is no indication that it will take him anywhere close to the back end of the initial 4-to-6 month prognosis.

"Ruben's given me a few lectures already to slow me down a little bit, because I do want to be ready to go from Day One," Utley said, "but it is something that I have to be careful of. So I imagine I will hear that a lot from these guys to try to slow me down a little bit, which is fine."

3) Utley said he is hoping to play in some spring training games.

4) Utley joked about the way he and the Phillies kept his hip issue under wraps throughout the season. The only public acknowledgement of the condition came from then-Phillies GM Pat Gillick, who simply said that Utley's hip had been bothering him. But Utley refused to acknowledge the condition during the season, preferring instead to focus on baseball.

"This kind of didn't get worse, it kind of stayed the same over the course of the season," Utley said. "That's why I didn't make a big deal about it. I didn't feel like making a big deal about it because I didn't want it to be a distraction. That's the last thing we needed, especially with the position we were in. I thought we handled it pretty well."

5) Utley said the pain affected him more in the field than at the plate, but conceded that the injury probably had something to do with the drop off in his power numbers over the course of the season.

6) One question I had for Utley concerned how his hip rehab will affect the normal offseason conditioning routine he uses to get ready for the season. Utley said the only part of his workout that is affected is his lower body workout. But after two and a half months he said he'll be able to start running around.

7) Utley said there isn't much of a chance that the hip issue could be one that arises again. It sounds like the surgery should be a permanent solution, which bodes well for the future.

"Now, I kind of have a nice little pretty hip, so it should be fine," Utley said.

8) And, finally, a public service announcement from Utley, who infamously declared the Phillies "World F-----' Champions" on the day of the parade.

"I'll tell all the kids not to use that word," Utley said. "But if they are 29 and they win the World Series, they could say that."

9) Expect an official announcement of the Raul Ibanez signing, and perhaps a press conference, Tuesday.

10) Chan Ho Park is indeed on his way to becoming a Phillie, although the signing will not be official until he takes a physical here in Philadelphia. Amaro said Park could be used as a starter or a reliever. He'll get an opportunity to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation behind Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Joe Blanton and Moyer. If Kendrick,  Happ, Carrasco or Carpenter happens to win the spot, Park would then move to the bullpen.

11) Carrasco has finished playing winter ball in Venezuela. Carrasco chose to play winter ball on his own, but has called it quits after about 30 innings, something the Phillies are glad he decided to do.

Sigh... now that's 3 bad moves for this off season so far.... Ibanez, Park and now Moyer.. Are the Phillies trying to set some sort of record for having the oldest team to attempt win the World series? C'mon now, we need to improve NOT go backwards, especially since the Mets are signing quality.... While we are, well, just "signing".... Don't get me wrong, Moyer was a nice fit for the team last year, but I have to say, a lot of it was luck... It will be interesting to see what the fans say we he starts getting rocked and can't go past the 2nd inning on most starts.... It's been less than 3 months since that magically season and I'm not feeling good about going into next year...

zeezuma - luck? He had a 3.71 ERA - that is not luck. Luck would be winning 17 games with an ERA of 5. I am starting to think Rollins was not only right, but a complete genious in regards to how to view the Philadelphia fans. They win the World Series, improve the left field position and bullpen and keep the rotation the same, and people are complaining. Mets are signing quality because they suck and they have to improve. We have one of the best bullpens in the majors, and you want major changes? Please - get a clue.

Looks like the Phils are now ready for the spring. Hopefully, Moyer's last couple of starts aren't a sign that he is out of gas. Moyer and Park give the team some strong veteran pitching, both starting and in relief. Wouldn't it be great if the did resign Pat the bat, even if that meant bye bye to some other player?

The puppet Ruben is doing what he is told. No big dollar signings, just the left overs that nobody really wants. I like Moyer, but as old as he is we can't expect the same performance. When an old player loses it, they lose it fast. Is Ruben going to try and convince us that we can repeat with these signings?

Three bad moves this off-season? Moyer is a good move, he can pitch his style for another year at least, Ibanez will probably hit 30 hr in this park easy, and hit 40 pts higher than Burrell. Park is a chance to be a #5 starter or a long relief man. So far not too bad in my book.

Great news indeed. Bet that 2nd year is an option but hope he got a nice bump on the 1st after the terrific year he had. Jamie Moyer is a class act that we can only hope will decide to move back to the area and stay in the organization when he finally hangs 'em up. Can you say 'pitching coach'?

I guess I'm one of the few NOT enamored with signing Moyer. He's old and had a great year last year. I just don't think the Phils are going to catch lightning in the bottle for a second year in a row with him or this rotation. Hamels is great but has pitched a lot of innings over the last couple years. That's worrisome. Which Myers will show up for how long? Blanton has not proven to be anything more than a .500 pitcher yet. The fifth starter is up in the air. Nah...call me cynical but we didn't improve anything there. I think Ibanez was a good catch. Nice numbers over the years and he hit well in a pitchers park. Sad to see Burrel go though. Need a right handed bat, and a good stop gap for Utley and Feliz. Mark DeRosa would of been a good addition. Hope I'm wrong, but just don't see the rotation panning out in '09.

mattk --> you are right about the Mets the last few years, but this year's signings are above and beyond what they did.. KRod and Putz are quality.. Park and Moyer are not... I used to be one who would question many of the Phillies' moves. Then they went out and won the whole ball of wax - shows what I know (and many others here as well I suspect). I'm inclined to trust in the whealings and dealings, and in Manuel as a coach.

Terrible move. The Burrell thing proves this is business. And why would you give 2 years to a 46 year old who was very good last year but the year before had an ERA over 5? You have to go to go year to year with Moyer. Now your stuck if he goes back to the guy with the plus 5 ERA. The only way he should have got 2 years is if you guaranteed 1 with incentives that guaranteed the second if he had a similar season to last year. And I like Moyer but business is business. People are still drunk from the title I think.

When the season was on the line, Jamie Moyer came through in the clutch. Game 3 of the World Series was an absolute must win & everyone thought Jamie Moyer was going to struggle since he had struggled against the Dodgers in a not so crucial game 3. He laid his body on the line on that one play where the runner was ruled safe at first. Another thing, having someone like Jamie Moyer makes people like myself feel that much younger knowing that there are men in their late 40s who are still playing major league baseball. Gary Varsho was right with his comment. A lot of so called Phillies fans need to wise up & wake up & realize that WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!! We can savor this for a long time. It's not like the other offseasons in the past where we wanted to criticize because there was no title. The fact that there are so many "fans" out there with short termed memories bothers me because this was really something special. If you "fans" can't appreciate this & trust the Phillies decisions in signing Ibanez, Park & Moyer, then nothing can ever make you happy in life. Savor that World Series championship & keep in mind the desperate Mets haven't won a World Series since 1986. For those of you who can't even remember October 2008, 1986 will feel like the age of Abraham Lincoln & the Ponderosa. And yes, that's how long it feels to Mets fans since they won it all. I'm glad Jamie Moyer will be there on Opening Day to celebrate the title with his teammates & Phillies fans.

Absolutely stupid signing. Now the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez, 36 years old, Chan Ho Park, 35 years old, and Jamie Moyer, 68 years old. Ruben Amaro is systematically deconstructing our future. Pathetic general management. Either that, or Amaro's a patsy, and he'll be fired as an excuse for our losing (in the near future). Trust me.

It's a known fact that teams that aren't trying to win, but trying rather to just maintain respectability and sell tickets, sign over-rated players with recognizable "names" to fake fans into thinking they're actually improving their ball club. This is one of those cases...with Ibanez, Moyer, and Chan Ho Park. Three elderly, over-the-hill, soon-to-be ex professional ballplayers.

You idiot Moyer lovers must have forgotten that, besides last season, Moyer's previous 6 were horrible. Last year was a fluke. Once professional hitters figure out what you're doing (throwing your 50mph fastball on the outside corner, every single pitch), they start to bat around, and embarrass you.

Looks like they will slot Carrasco to take over for Myers in the rotation for 2010. Doubt they can afford to resign Brett. Likely rotation projections: 09; Hamels, Myers, Blanton, Moyer, Happ. 10; Hamels, Carrasco, Blanton, Happ, Moyer. They lose control of Blanton and Moyer's contract will hit expire after 2010 so will Drabek and Savery? be ready by 11.

Ok. Amaro said right after getting the GM job that he was going to concentrate on pitching, pitching and pitching. Well, he just signed a journeyman (Park), who will replace Seanez, and resigned his own FA, who BTW had one of those magical seasons. And don't get me wrong, what Moyer did was special, but anybody asking for Moyer to repeat last season, or getting close to those numbers, is living in a fantasy world. He is most likely to revert to 2006 (ERA of over 5.00). Moyer benefited by facing the young Marlins and Nationals a lot last year. There is not guarantee that he will face them that much or even to have success, if he ever pitch against them again. Second, he needs the umpire to give him the corners, if not he is in trouble, especially against veteran teams. In the playoffs he was awful, even though he beat the 'young' (there is that word again) Rays team. The way I see it, Moyer will pitch 4 innings most nights and Chan Ho Park will take it from there until the sixth or 7th. That’s not what I envisioned when Amaro said that his priority was pitching, pitching, and pitching. And BTW, what’s going to happen now to our young starters (Happ, Carrasco, Carpenter, Kendrick, etc.) that Moyer is signed for two years? Trade them and get older and older? And guys, the World Series is over, wake up and smell the 2009 season, which is around the corner.

16 wins and if you remember, could have had more as the team did not give him the normal run support for a while there mid-season and he got ND in several well-pitched games. A good influence in the locker room and on Hamels, 16 wins.....Not a bad signing, in my mind.

Smedkus- I wasn't talking about Utley, Howard, Hamels, the core obviously. Moyer is old, he is not going to produce the same as last year. If you knew anything about the Phillies, you would know they go after marginal players for low salaries and hope they over perform. If you're happy with a 46 year old, another left handed bat with 100+ strikeouts, and below average pitcher like Park, you need to watch more baseball.

I would like another right-handed bat, but there really isn't a lot of quality left-handed pitching in the national league, two of the best lefties as far as ERA play for the Phils.

Nice way to end winter ball for Carrasco. A 5 inning, three hit, shutout last week. Guess we will next see Carlos pitching for Venezuela in Group C in the World Baseball Classic the beginning of March against Canada, Italy and TEAM USA.

Gelman: with the Phillies 2008 5-2, 2007 14-12. You say go back 6 years? Ok 6 years ago he was 21-7. 246-185 career. You call that awful?

gelman - his only "awful" year was 2004. And in 2 and a half seasons with the Phils, he is 35-21 with an ERA of 4.5 - not exacly awful. What are you scared of, the fact that our #4/#5 pitcher is coming off a 16 win season with a 3.71 ERA?

The negative comments, especially on the age of the signings are amazing. How about the Heeze Kids of 83? The Phillies made sure they have a lineup with its core intact for another World Series run without giving up the farm. They are building for a long competitive run. We'll b efine

Wow, some people are negative. I admit, I can be a downer myself but uh, they did just win the World Series!!!! I give them a pass and bringing Moyer back for 2years is good for what the writer mentioned, he's essentially the de facto pitching coach. At least Amaro is trying and not bringing in some Marlon Byrd type. I wanted a younger RH bat in LF field but who would you give up for that?

To all those defending the Phils decisions about their signings...there is really no need. There are a lot of people on this website who get down on everything. They were doing it before the Phillies won the W.S. Those people, are just plan and simple, sorry...You can't talk sense to them though. Even if all of our signings turn out great, they will just move on to something else...

Oh this writing stinks. Hey that guy mispelled a word wrong. Oh, I was tripped up for an hour because he said "was it" instead of "it was". The Phillies will never win the World Series. They suck. Why can't we get something we don't have? Oh, I hate everything we have, it's horrible. These guys suck. They will never be able to do it again. Why couldn't we tear down the team and rebuild it? Don't you know that when you pay a lot of money you are guaranteed success? See the Mets did it, why can't we? You dolts need to wake up and realize that if you don't have "chemistry" you don't have jack-$$$$. Look at the Yanks, look at the old men's olympic basketball team. Stars don't mean squat...Year and year you see this. Moyer fits on this team better than most people. Lowe could get here and hate playing here. Why? Because as soon as he gets here you'll want something else.

Uscitizen, after that old ’83 team we waited 10 years to be good again. And that 1993 reminds me of this 2008, a good group of young-veteran players… but they only had that one great season, everything felt apart after that. It took almost 30 years for us to be back to the WS and win it all. We should surround this nucleus with younger players (especially our own), because this nice run could end sooner that expected. And Gary81, I am not concern with the left-handed starters, is with the southpaws in the bullpen that could give us trouble late in the game. Also, in a short series it could be problematic. Remember the Cubs last year? They won 100 games, but their line up was mostly right-handed and did not advance deep into the playoffs. The Phillies need to get a right-handed bat with some pop pronto (Juan Rivera is still available) if not they could run into the same fortune as the Cubbies.

Did Carrasco shut winterball down early or is the season already over? I'd love to see him win the 5th spot in spring training.

zeezuma - you're an idiot, period. Please move away from the Philadelphia area and switch your allegiance to some other city and its sports teams...You are a disgrace to Philly Phans everywhere...Additionally, your grasp of what's important to the PHILLIES is just shy of an infant's hold on its rattle. Go to hell, zeezuma. PK

I could see this being the last year for Myers, whose contract expires at the end of the season. I would not sign him to extension, certainly not for the type of money he is sure to ask. How he got a 3-year deal for $25 million in the first place is beyond me. He's too inconsistent and unstable for my liking. Which is why I wouldn't mind seeing them make a pitch for Lowe, if he's willing to accept four years. I would also take a flier on Daniel Cabrera. Sure, he has never reached his enormous potential. But it's just that has me thinking the Phillies would be wise to try and cultivate it. Then, they would a potential future rotation of Hamels, Carrasco, Blanton, Cabrera, Happ/Savery/Drabek. Then again, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

zeesuma: Luck? With an ERA of 3.71 he was making a good deal of his own luck. He may indeed fall apart next year. (And maybe Eaton will be able to pitch again.) It's possible. But your saeeming certainty owes more to the state of your mind that it does to Moyer's abilities.

With Jamie Moyer back in the fold, perhaps we can sit back and relax. Let's see if management will fine tune this team a little more. I still see Jon Garland sitting out there with 14 to 18 wins a season, 30 plus starts, and 200 plus innings. He'd fit in that rotation like the spokes of a wheel. One other thought. Perhaps, they could give Moyer the opener.

I am completely underwhelmed by signing a 46 year old pitcher to a 2 year contract. We need someone like Lowe. The Mets made a statement with their pitcher signings. We get Moyer and Park? How about Lowe to bolster the rotation. We throw Hamels, Lowe, Myers, Blanton and one of the young guys. Moyer got lit up in the playoffs. It is truly time to move on an with an A level free agent like Lowe, and then let youth be served.
