There's still a good possibility that Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard will be traded before this weekend, when the Eagles will hold their post-draft minicamp.

According to league sources, Sheppard's agent, Lamont Smith, has had extensive conversations with the Jacksonville Jaguars about a possible offer for his client. The Jags, who are trying to make their defense as Peyton Manning-proof as possible, were interested in Sheppard before the draft. But their first-round trade-up with Baltimore to get defensive end Derrick Harvey cost them two third-round picks and a fourth-round selection, leaving them with just two picks in the first four rounds.

Because of that, they weren't willing to part with their second-round pick, which they spent on another defensive end, Auburn's Quentin Groves, in a deal for Sheppard.

But Smith is trying to broker a deal that would have the Jags giving the Eagles a package of '09 draft picks for Sheppard.

Asked Sunday night whether he expects Sheppard to play for the Eagles in '08, coach Andy Reid said: ``As I sit here right now, Lito is an Eagle. That's how it is, just like every other guy on this football team.

``It gives us one great opportunity for a nice secondary. The way to use him is just like we used (former Eagle cornerbacks) Bobby Taylor, Al Harris and Troy Vincent. We just rotated all of them and they were all starters in our eyes.''

why would you trade a probowl player for a second round choice. instead of the db who were drafted on saturday in the first round why wouldn't a team want a sure probowl player instead of the db that went saturday one from troy a small school another cromatrie living off his cousin name a lot of mixed review on kid from kansas why not a sure thing anything less than a first round and lito stays even if he sits,he sign a contract and he must live up to it or sit

I would keep Lito. Play hardball. He owes Philly for dogging it last year. Let him sit out if he wants. He'll get $0 instead of $2M

I wouldn't trade Lito. To quote a famous ex-Eagle, "for who, for what?"

could anyone promise me that the defense back drafted on saturday will be better than lito, why do the eagles feel they have to give him away only a top player , at a position of need or he sits here and doesnt play players dont run the league the owners have to stand pat and let the players know that they sign a contract they must honor it or sit.

Keep Lito unless we can work a deal for a primo WR! The Eagles are wasting McNabb...He's going to be good this year, but he'll have no one open to throw to...

rockym, the period key is located to the left of the question mark key on your keyboard. The question mark looks like this: ? The period is simply a little dot that I will put at the end of this sentence. <--- it's right there and here's another ---> .

Lito should have his contract redone so that he feels that the Eagles are committed to him. The Eagles certainly have the money since they don't have to pay anyone first round money. Who wants Jacksonville's picks? They are a good team and their picks would be lousy. With Lito, the Eagles could have a great defense this year. You could also move Sheldon Brown into a safety spot. Brown tackles well and can deliver a good lick. Ask Reggie Bush. With the type of coverage we could throw on the field combined witha decent pass rush we could dominate. What if Brown or Samuel or Dawkins gets banged up? Lito would probably like Jacksonville since he comes from there.

Rocky, The fact is, Lito is injury prone and unless he can prove he can stay healthy, he is only worth a 2nd round pick. At this point, teams don't even want to give up a 2nd rounder for him, so I suggest we take what we can get for him.

With Lito in the secondary, we would have the most fearsome tandems in the secondary....Lito in the right CB position, Sheldon in SS position Dawkins in FS and then Asante in left CB. They shouldn't trade Lito for any 2009 draft picks.

To me it makes no sense to trade Lito for future draft picks, unless we already have a deal in place to trade those picks for a veteran receiver. I've got a Pro-bowl player in hand. I'm not interested in betting on a kid coming out of college next year.

Hahah Drizzal, Good one! Let's take a shot at 09'. I hope the Panthers flop and we get a top pick next year. Anyone know who is out there?

you only trade lito to jac. for a 1st rounder in 09. then you take 2 of your 3 1st rounders & trade them to cin. for ocho cinco or a. boldin

Shouldn't we have heard about some undrafted free agent signings today? That ususally happens as soon as the draft is over.

I heard on profootball.com that the Jaguars are insisting that any package of players/picks for Sheppard includes the eagles taking Hugh Douglas.

I just dont get it. What's wrong with making 2 million!! Go out play hard and earn your money! If the Eagles trade Lito I believe it will be one of the worst mistakes Andy Reid has made since becoming head coach. But then agin Andy Reid doesn't care what the fans think, only what Mr. Laurie's wallet thinks.

rockinrob, its a good idea to restructure Lito's contract but that will only open a very big can or worms. You cannot satisfy everyone. EAGLES has the money to do just that but if I were them, I wouldn't cos that will only cause more uproar about unsatisfied players. When you sign a contract, you are legally bound by that contract for which you shall be held accountable for if you somehow deviate from it. So Lito should just sit down, play the whole season without missing a game and teams will be knocking for his services.

I would let the three of them duke it out in training camp (samuel, shappard and brown) and tell sheppard and brown whoever wins gets a big raise.

The trade the Eagles should try to make is to package up Lito and one of the Eagles two '09 first round picks (the one obtained from Carolina during the draft this past weekend), for Chad Johnson of Cincy. Of Cincy's first 4 picks over the weekend, they selected 2 WR's. Think they're expecting #85 back?

Any chance the Jags trade receiver Matt Smith for Lito Sheppard. He is a big, athletic receiver who could help in the RedZone!

Any chance the Jags trade receiver Matt Jones #18 (6' 6'' and 234lbs) for Lito Sheppard. He is a big, athletic receiver who could help in the RedZone!

If the eagles can get a decent pick for him, let him go. I beleive that before training camp opens, there will be "Good" veteran wide receivers available to trade for. Suppose the eagles get a two and another pick for Lito. They would then have two number ones and two number two picks for next years draft. There is no one who could outbid them if a receiver became available. and they would still have good picks for the draft after this season

What good will 09 draft picks do the Eagles in 08???? Maybe trade him for an 09 1st and 2nd after the season. A 1st and 2nd is steep but the Eagles shouldn't give away a good young CB with a good contract still.

Good post Driz......you're exactly right..I don't care if we get 5 picks for him in the '09 draft, we can't draft, sign or play that many new guys in 1 year, so the majority of the picks are wasted. Besides if the new draftee Jackson doesn't pan out, I'd have Lito returning punts and kickoffs, like it or not.

For those of you trying to figure out a way to trade Lito for picks that can be turned over for a deal for Chad Johnson --- ARE YOU CRAZY??? Didn't we learn our lesson with T.O.? Heck, even Jerry Jones won't take the risk with "88" --- & he's got Pacman & T.O.!!! ..... Lito does appear to be a solid citizen, who for whatever reason, makes the Eagles feel they can not have him on the squad. Who knows? But, if both sides feel strongly that it is over, than take what you can get & walk away.

I never really believed a deal was going to make sense. Lito is really in a similar situation as LJ Smith. He was injured, and it is going to be in his best interest to have a big year for the eagles this year. IF he does, he will be worth much more next year both in terms of the salary he will command in the inevitable contract renegotiation, and what the eagles will be able to get for him in terms of players or picks.

Draft picks are useless...I wouldn't trade him unless we get a pplayer that can help us right now. And why are the Eagles dissing Lito...what did he do...except play hard for them and make the pro bowl? Once again the idiots in Eagles Mgt. handling things badly!
