Certainly not a slow news day as the Eagles resume training camp at the NovaCare Complex.
Andy Reid dropped this little ditty – he’s gonna try out Tony Hunt at fullback. Let’s see. Dan Klecko didn’t work out. The staff obviously isn’t pleased with Jason Davis because they had Jed Collins taking a lot of snaps with the first unit last week.
Hunt’s been a factor on special teams, seems willing to do whatever it takes to make the grade …
“He’s gonna get some reps in there this week,” Reid said. “He is a player when he came out and played very good football this past week. Not only carrying the football but he was taking special teams very serious. You saw the two tackles he had on the kickoff team.”
Hunt says he doesn’t have to relearn the playbook because there isn’t any difference between running back and fullback here except for blocking schemes.
“Any chance you have to get on the field is a great opportunity,” Hunt said.
More on this in tomorrow’s Inky.

Booker would be the best chance at playing this position. Hunt's gonna get killed.
WHATEVER WORKS CAUSE THEY DONT HAVE SQUAT AT FULLBACK AS IT IS. TONY IS TOO TALENTED TO SIT AND DO NOTHING. HE IS A BIG MAN FOR A RUNNING BACK AND AS LONG AS HE GETS THE SCHEMES THIS WILL WORK. ID LOVE TO SEE HIM OUT THERE EVERY DOWN. GO BIRDS

booker? he is smaller than bwest. he would get run over as a fb.
moose42, you only need to click "SUBMIT" once. Be patient, dude. JimCollins, Booker is too small to be a fullback... Hunt probably is slightly undersized to be a fullback also but we'll see.
Yo moose, say that again please- I didn't catch it the first 4 times.

Timmy - Did Andy Reid comment on the progress of Joe May?
Why do PSU alumni have to drink the kool-aid and think he is good- look at the tapes- he has looked SLOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW for the past year and 1/2 and broke one run against some back-up scrubs last week. He's not an NFL RB or FB- only getting shot because special teams have been awful and they need all the help they can get there
Why didn't they try this in June? Were they convinced Klecko was the answer? Sometimes obvious things seem to escape Andy.

This is typical Reid. Last year he started the season without a return man resulting in an opening day loss to Green Bay. Now, he doesn't have a fullback. But what the heck, the fullback gets few reps in Fat Andy's offense.
Lenny22, Fullback in the NFL is a dying position. I can't think of any off hand, but I'm sure there are some teams who don't even carry a fullback. Most just use two tight end sets or put a tight end in the back field in situations where they would normally use a fullback. That's probably why the Eagles haven't really put a lot of thought into it. Basically, whoever shows up and plays special teams gets to be our fullback.
I agree with Lenny. The more things change, the more things stay the same. I was thinking, maybe hoping for 11-5, but this move along with Special Teams and WR, its seems like another painful season. Thanks for bringing me back down to earth FatMan!
5 for MVP!!! yeah i'm not setting myself at all, am i??????
jebus
Fullback? What's that?........Sometimes you get the feeling that Andy came across that position reading coaching manuals this off-season, and now, after 10 years, it's "hey let's get SOMEBODY to play fullback."
One solution...Put reid in at Fullback. Then we can get a new coach, new GM and new fullback. I am sure he can open up a few holes. That is the only thing that will help us at this point because those glasses he wears don't allow him to see all of the problems with the team. I can't wait to see what washed up bums he tries to sign in the midseason. Can anyone out there get open and catch a pass? Hello? We need to look a little past midget football for receivers. Sheesh Andy, get a grip will ya!
This is a back that IF he makes the squad, needs to be used in short yardage situations. The we won't have to embarassingly throw a pass on fourth and inches. If you're not going to use him for that, then cut him.
could be a good move. hunt seems a little small though.
Frankly, I'm tired of the Eagles trying to literally phase out certain positions just to avoid having to pay someone to fill that position on a roster. I think they'd do the same thing with strong safety if they could get away with it.

Considering that the Andy Ried scheme uses a fullback during less downs than the punt return unit sees, I'm not all that nervous about not having this resolved yet.
I do not like this move. He is a better HB. Yes he is not all that fast, but you need a prower back to go with all those small HB backs we have.
I know that FB is no longer an important position, but I do find it annoying that the Eagles are constantly seeking to play players out of position. A career outside LB suddenly gets moved inside, a college DE gets converted to LB, a RB becomes a FB, a skier is the return guy, etc. It's part and parcel of these guys' absolute conviction that they're the smartest football guys on the planet, and that when everyone else (including SB champions) takes something as accepted wisdom (e.g., you have to run the ball at least 45% of the time, or you need a legitimate #1 receiver if you're a pass-happy team), the Eagles know better.
I agree, Hunt's small for a fullback, but I think it could work. Remember last year, when they decided that they were going to use a blocking back on goal line situations, they never used Tapeh. They used Nick Cole -- all 350 pounds of him. Tapeh blocked occassionally and caught a couple of passes out of the backfield. At least with Hunt, he could actually run for short yardage, too.
I agree with GANick....this is becoming a trend with Reid. I don't have higjh expectations this season. We'll see.
dump moats and the problem is over...

Hunt is good for FB position, who said Booker? they stuck on stupid?????
I think this is a make or break game for Tony Hunt. His problem in the past has been pass blocking.
tony hunt is a tailback. not a fullback. this is stupid. he is the perfect changeup back to spell b-west. use him in short yardage situations and whatnot. get rid of buckhalter. he isn't a big back. stop pretending he is
I would not be as worried about fullback as the kick return position. I had no idea Booker had never returned kicks until I heard it on TV the other day during the game. This is vintage Reid. How can you have the disaster at kick/punt return over the last few years and not plan to have a stud there this year? How arrogant.
Man, you people just love to find something o complain about. It' unreal.
Tony Hunt is too good to leave off the field. He's big enough to play the position and he can run and catch with the best of them. The Eagles version of Tom Rathman ?? I hope so.
Why put a fullback in there since theres been nobody blocking for westbrook anyway. The way the iggles can't make 3rd down and 1 goes to show you that.

scars73, that was really insightful. You're right, nobody should be complaining about a team that's been .500 the last 3 years and finished DFL in 2007. What's to complain about? You people still feel the thrill from 1960, don't you?
How's the koolaid, dude?
What's Keith Byar's cell #?
Ryan, you want to run Hunt instead of Buckhalter? Buckhalter isn't great, but he's a lot better than Hunt. You must be a PSU fan. Let me break the news: Hunt is SLOW.
This is a joke.Except for Brian Westbrook, playing the RB position for the Eagles is like going to Penn State to play QB.Futile.
Tony Hunt needs to go to a tema that will use him 15-20
times a game.A solid #2 back with some good NFL level coaching.
Not the Eagles.
