Phils or Eagles: What will you watch tomorrow?

So. . .

All week, Sunday looked like it was going to be 12 hours of Philadelphia sporting excellence. You were going to go to church in the morning, get home, throw some sausages on the grill, crack open a few root beers, plop down on the couch, and watch the Eagles take on the Rams. After watching the 4 p.m. NFL game, you'd do some sit-ups, take a shower, start scooping chili from the Crock Pot, then watch Cole Hamels square off against Johan Santana with a chance to either sweep the Mets or pull to within two games of first.

Now, Hanna has messed it all up.

Now, the Eagles start at 1 p.m. and the Phillies start at 2:15 p.m. and you are going to have to decide how to handle the situation.

It should be a fascinating look at Remote Control strategy.

Do you watch the Phils game and switch to the Eagles game between innings?

Do you ignore the Phillies game, watch the entire Eagles game, then switch over at 4 p.m. to catch the final few innings of the baseball game?

Do you watch the baseball game at halftime and during commercials?

These are the things I think about when I am sitting inside with nothing to do because it is raining outside.

^

Let's take a little more of an in-depth look at the Phillies' pitching options in the wake -- no pun in intended -- of Hanna's postponement of today's game.

1) The Phillies will keep LHP Jamie Moyer against Mets righty Pedro Martinez in the first game of the doubleheader tomorrow, which is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on Philly 57

2) LHP Cole Hamels will start the nightcap against LHP Johan Santana

3) RHP Joe Blanton, who has struggled in his past couple starts, will start the series-opener against the Marlins on Monday. This will be Blanton's first career start against the Fishies.

4) The Phillies will likely need two more starters besides Hamels, Myers, Moyer and Blanton. They'll need one Tuesday, and they'll need one Thursday, since Moyer and Hamels would both be on three days rest at that point. Theoretically, they could start Hamels or Moyer on short rest. But after seeing all the hoopla their decision to start Hamels on his normal rest Sunday created, and seeing as though they want to get Moyer all the rest he can, neither of them are going to go early.

5) The two options would seem to be RHP Kyle Kendrick, whom the team skipped this past time to get Hamels against the Mets on Sunday, and lefty J.A. Happ, who pitched well in two July starts but couldn't get another opportunity.

6) I theorize that the Phillies will elect to start Happ against the Marlins on Tuesday. Kendrick pitched six scoreless against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park on Aug. 6, but he allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings in Miami in July. In his only career start against the Brewers, he allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings last August.

I've got to say this benefits the Mets, since it is so hard to sweep a doubleheader.

Is it really any harder to sweep a doubleheader than it is to win any two games in a row? The truth is that the greatest benefits the Mets have are the two-game lead on Sept. 7 and the fact they've owned us all year. The rainout is a wash for both teams.

I understand the storm warnings in place, and the fact that radar shows this heading to NYC. But to call this game before a drop of rain has fallen? C'mon...I'm checking out the webcams right now, and roads still look dry. Is this a Mets team seeking an edge?

Enjoy the day off boys, it sounds like a long, long day tomorrow. If the Phils do take both, the NY media will be harder on the Mets than any NL team could ever be. Like "Deja Vu all over again".

Question: Is winning a doubleheader any more difficult than sweeping a 3 day series? Last I checked, to win you still have to pitch, hit and catch the ball no matter when or where the game is played.

Ya can't mess with mother nature.

I agree it is tough to sweep a double header, but 2 out 3 at the Mets home would still give the Phills momentum! So advantage Phills tomorrow if they can split. If Moyer wins the day game and Hammels loses the night game the NYC media will say the Mets Santana salvaged a victory. If its the other way around NYC media will say Mets had a chance to take the series but Hammels and Phills shut them down Phills head home end road trip by beating Mets!

I am watching the US open, which is being played down the street from Shea, and a raindrop has yet to fall as of 4:15.

Perhaps Jim Salisbury will offer a detailed analysis of weather patterns and radar models in his next "Inquirer Baseball Column". Good pt by Glenboe. They are playing the tennis...

Who cares?! It's going to be a picture perfect day on sunday. Get off your butts, go outside, and enjoy life instead of sitting on a couch all day watching ports teams that are going no where this year!!!!!!!!

I love the Phightins, but I will definitely be taping the first game. Can't wait for the Eagles game. I will wait to watch the Phils till around 7 (after the second NFL game) then fast forward between every pitch, that way I can get throught the whole game in an hour and watch the night game live.

EAGLES...and Phils during commercials if their play is worthy.

Eagles is what you watch. Phils is what you check in on. The Phillies have not earned our full attention this year.
