Flyers get Hamhuis from Predators

POSTED: Saturday, June 19, 2010, 1:38 PM

Is trading Ryan Parent for Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011 a good deal for the Flyers?
Yes
No

The Flyers have traded defenseman Ryan Parent back to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the rights to defenseman Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011.

Hamhuis can be a free agent July 1, meaning the Flyers now have exclusive negotiating rights with him until them.

“Obviously, our intention is to get him signed prior to that date and that is what our aim is at this point in time,” added general manager Paul Holmgren said. “The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better.”

Hamhuis, 27, recorded 24 points (5 goals, 19 assists) and 49 penalty minutes in 78 regular-season games with Nashville in 2009-10. He also posted two assists and two penalty minutes in six games of the Western Conference quarterfinal series with Chicago.

"Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman,” said Holmgren. “He has been in Nashville since his draft year. He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we'd like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense."

In six full seasons of play in the NHL, all with the Predators, Hamhuis has compiled 32 goals and 129 assists for 161 points and 375 penalty minutes in 483 regular season games, in addition to nine points (1G,8A) and 18 penalty minutes in 28 career playoff games. He was a first-round pick in 2001.

"Obviously it is sad to leave the Predators. I spent some great years with them and it is great organization to be a part of,” said Hamhuis. “I've heard nothing but great things about the city of Philadelphia and the Flyers.

"I think Philly has an unbelievable defensive core,” added Hamhuis. “To join a core like that makes the Flyers one of the tougher ones in the league. To play against the teams from the East, the conference has a lot of great forwards, and watching the playoffs, having a great defense will get you a long way.”

Parent was acquired by the Flyers as part of the Peter Forsberg trade with Nashville.

"I think Ryan is a good kid,” said Holmgren. “He is an extremely hard worker. We certainly thank him for his services and his time here. He has a lot of upside as a player and he is going back to an organization that obviously knows him because they drafted him."

Great pick-up---if we can sign him. Hamhuis and Timonen played together as a pairing way back when.

Am I reading this right? Is this breaking? This guy is an excellent defender. I believe he still has to be signed, as he is a UFA, but he'll make the D that much better.

LOVE this deal. Homer probably already has the parameters for the deal worked out with Hamhuis' agents. Now- I assume the pick is contingent on if he signs with us or not. So do we get no pick if he signs or just a lesser one?

Sign him. Nice upgrade over a guy that clearly is still not ready for primetime in Ryan Parent.

great move by Homer. Sending a guy that couldn't crack the lineup on a regular basis for the rights to a guy that is a solid top four defenseman is great!

Nice! I'll admit, I don't know much about Hamhuis, but it looks like the Flyers have instantly upgraded their D. I kind of thought that was just as important as their goaltending situation this offseason. Looks like their gearing up to make another deep run in the playoffs. Already can't wait for next season. Go Flyers.

Sounds like Coburn may be gone now, perhaps in a deal that brings in a goalie. Love this move all around.

Gnik you are not only an idiot but show you know little about winning the game. Asham is more than adequate. He has excellent skills and is not afraid to get in the face of anyone. why would you get rid of a player with good all around skill to get a "bigger heavyweight" as you put it that will just take up a roster spot to may fight now and then and log 2-4 minutes a game...oh, first of all, its Bernier; and second, so you would pick up a prospect kid and not have a true veteran/starter for Bernier to learn from ?

i am so excited about this. parent was a liability (sorry) to the flyers. maybe he'll be good later on--that's what they said about sammy d btw for the sixers. parent also fell on boosh in game 5, resulting in his injury to his knees. hopefully holmy can get this done!

good move. pronger and timmonen are getting old and slowed down at the end of that great playoff run. parent couldn't play here. coburn stays as he is needed providing depth on D. Hamuis will not be cheap, might mean carter will be traded to save cap space.

no way could we get dustin brown AND bernier for carter, I'm thinking carter for bernier straight up will be a pretty even trade. Bernier is gonna be a star and they picked him in the top 5 in 2006, they obviously want an impact player if they are going to move him.

Great pickup by Homer! Now our "D" will have the depth that the long playoff run showed we needed. Homer was also smart not to take Nashville's pre-playoff offer of Parent AND Coburn for Hamhuis. But we still need a goalie, now that Halak is off the table I say go for Evgeni Nabakov...but he has to take a cut in his $6 million salary.

I just checked the results of the Poll. 5.5% of people who voted thought that this was a bad deal. Unless they can't sign Hamuis, maybe. But I'm sure they must have worked out a deal already. Anyway , just getting rid of Parent for anything is worth it. I have never seen him play well, EVER! Hurt or not, getting rid of him is a good deal.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 2:32 PM, 06/19/2010
Nice pickup. Ryan struggled and the injury bug cost him. Hamhuis is a player who has avoided getting injured and plays smart. One more piece.

In responce to GNIKGNARLY trade offer. "Now move Carter for Dustin Brown and Jonathon Brenier, then replace Asham with a much bigger heavy weight as the tough guy and we're BACK in the FINALS next spring." Um, this isnt fantasy hockey and your trade offer is a fantasy. Your not going to get Brown and Bernier for just Carter alone. You could get Brown or Bernier alone but not both. Sorry pal.

This sounds really good, but to evaluate this move you have to know ultimately what Hamhuis' salary will be in the deal to be negotiated. Right now he is at 2 million, but I guess he'll expect a healthy payrise. Otherwise he is an exciting allrounder with a lot of grit and skill. This could be a good start to the postseason. Can't wait for the next year...

bsbullie- Bernier-brenier was a typo, my secretary is off today. 2ndly- I actually really like Asham- but willingness to take on anyone isn't the only requisite for a tough guy- I'm not looking at this solely from a fighting standpoint. If you look at the whole roster- the only really big man is Pronger and you can't have him be the only body able to take on the biggest guys from other teams because he has much bigger responsibilities. Asham's gone anyway- I'm just saying make the inevitable replacement a big man. For the record- I likely know more about this sport than you'll learn in the rest of your pitiful life so think before you jump in.

Asham is not going anywhere,...he's perfect on that line and had a great post-season,...he's one of those guys that gets in the right place at the right time;doesn't always capitalize but at least he's there around the puck and making things happen,....goon hockey is gone from Philly,..its all about physical, strong and fast athletes

Anything has to be better than what Parent showed in the playoffs. Instead of retiring Bernie's number we should have retired his last name and let no more Flyers play with that name! This article would've been better with some plus/minus numbers. Goals/assists and PIM are nice to know but we're talking about a defenseman. Plus/minus isn't the perfect stat but it would complete the picture. How about height/weight?

Excellent deal...too bad Homer didn't get Dan Ellis's rights thrown into the deal so we could sign him cheap/quick...resign Coburn...trade Carter (would prefer Briere, but that won't happen) to Florida for Nathan Horton and picks and we have a scoring winger for the 1st line with Gags & Richy!!! Sign a Colby Armstrong for the 3rd line...Carcillo for the 4th and a Milan Jurcina/Andy Sutton/Johnny Boychuk for the 3rd D pairing...relatively cheap guys who can play and would probably like a shot at the Cup!!!

Nice move by Holmgren. This guy is solid, while Parent should develop into a good defenceman yet in Nashville. Off the track here but inside info is that Carey Price will be dealt by the Habs yet, supposedly to Edmonton, while the Habs sign an older more experienced netminder for next year, e.g. Marty Biron.

bsbullie - before taking shots at other people, do your homework. Asham is a free agent and easily replaceable. Boucher is already under contract for next season, so it would be likely that he starts 25-30 games. I think Bernier is the move to make; Hamhuis will command 2-3 million, so its safe to say that Carter and/or Coburn are history. Should be an interesting draft next weekend...

Hamhuis has been in the league since 2003/04, rarely misses a game, and is plus 3 in 483 regular season games but minus 12 in 28 playoff contests in a strong division. He certainly is used to compete on a high level but hasn't done much yet in the postseason. He is 6'1" at 209 lbs., quite a big guy but not slow/obersized. Good hungry guy entering the prime of his career, tough and talented, hitting hard if necessary. Good guy!

How could anybody that's watched Briere in the playoffs want him out of here? Carter needs to be gone and I'll take Briere's soft regular season play every time if it means he plays like he did this year in the playoffs. I can't wait to see what is gonna come of the goalie situation. I think the 1 thing Homer has shown us is that he can be very unpredictable with his moves and I personally love the suspense.

I think the next move is to trade Carter for Bernier, after that we need to sign a 3rd line winger; right now I see the lines as Gagne Richards Carcillo, Hartnell Briere Leino, JVR Giroux (sign), Powe Betts Lappy; I think we are set at D now because Bartulis and Syrvet should be able to cheaply fill the last spot so we can afford Hamhuis and an extra winger. I also think that Asham is the odd man out because he is a FA.

Nice pick up by Homer. Never was much of a Parent fan. I don't know anything about Hamhuis but,he has a cool name. LOL! I agree with AFlyers66, Coburn could be next. He hasn't been the same player since he took that puck to the face a few years ago in the playoffs. His play has really slipped. We still need to ship out Jeff(shoots wide) Carter. Looking forward to a fantastic year come October. LETS GO FLYERS!!

I love how the MORONS that attack and bash my posts don't actually READ them. What are you guys- All Eric Holder??? I said a big body guy NOT just for fighting, but to take some of the body work of the biggest guys on the other teams so Pronger isn't playing 30+ minutes against 3rd liners just because he's the only guy big enough. Try READING what I say before bashing it. TOOLS.

Coburn was a bit erratic for a time in the regular season, but came alive in the playoffs with smart play and great first passes. His shot is an untapped resource...a real rocket. As he matures and grows a bit in size, he'll be a top D-man with leadership capabilities that he can hone with Timmonen and Pronger close by.

It's often these subtle offseason moves that prove big over the long-term. Homer, now feeling secure after this season's playoff run, is obviously growing into his role and feeling his strength around the league. This is a sound move by a confident GM. I'm feeling very good about the whole vibe here. My thought is that signing Hamhuis will be but a bonus. Unloading Parent for no obligated cap hit in return is the real story here. Plus, I like the continued Nashville East good karma. That Forsberg trade is the trade that just keeps on giving. I remember that night Forserg went to Nashville, and Chairman Snider said, "...We, as an organization, don't believe in rebuildig." WOW, was he right! Since then, it's been a semis and a finals appearance. Is it October yet? LET'S GO FLYERS!

Great move and major upgrade on D. Now we have to dump salary to fit him in, so I think it's possible we may lose Carter for Bobby Ryan and stick with Leighton/Boosh in net -or- try to get Quick or Bernier and picks. It's a shame we're so loaded with centers and he's the odd man out but the problem could certainly be worse.

Everyone except Romus seems to forget Mike Testwuide. He's got size and hopefully cracks the lineup immediately. He'll fill in for Asham if we can't keep him. I think Asham is a good depth player with a lot of experience and a big team guy, would like to see him again in the orange and black. I am wondering how much Hamhuis will be making, and the goalie situation may involve one of the other d-men, maybe even Timonen.

Makes you wonder what would have happened if Homer had pulled of this deal at the deadline, and we were able to roll all the way through the playoffs with Hamhuis shouldering some of the minutes (that Parent couldn't handle) that were clearly gassing Pronger and TImonen at the end of the run...

Hamhuis is solid--Parent is not (not yet, anyway). Advantage Holmgren. Plus he picked up a draft pick, something he hasn't done in a couple of years. All is forgiven Paulie. I'd love to see Derek Boogaard in a Flyers uniform, even if it is just for 60 games a year for three minutes a game. Dress him against the Leafs, Pens, Rangers, Devils, Blues, teams with certified super-heavyweights. Someone needs to smack down Colton Orr once and for all.

GNIKGNARLY Now move Carter for Dustin Brown and Jonathon Brenier, then replace Asham with a much bigger heavy weight as the tough guy and we're BACK in the FINALS next spring. 1st, it is 2010. The Flyers got to the finals without a heavyweight. How many fights did you see the ENTIRE play-offs, any team? 1 or 2? And they were spur of the moment kind of fights. 2nd, maybe the Kings will throw in their 1st born son with that deal. If Holmgren could somehow get Bernier and a pick for Carter I'd be thrilled. But if he could wrangle away Dustin Brown, their captain who played on the 1st line for Team USA, Homer himself can sing God Bless America before the games. And Aaron Asham, while not my favorite player, was the only legit scoring threat in Game 2 and played a great series. And bsbullie, Bernier by all accounts isn't just some prospect, he is the real deal, just blocked by Quick. I'd pull the trigger on that deal before the kings realize it's a bad idea.
