Davis has experience as an NFL defensive coordinator. Before he took the linebackers job in Cleveland in 2011, he was the Arizona Cardinals' coordinator from 2009-10. He also ran San Francisco's defense from 2005-06.
His defenses ranked near the bottom of the league. In Arizona, the Cardinals finished 14th and 31st in yards allowed during his tenure and 11th and tied for 26th in points allowed. In San Francisco, the 49ers finished 32d and 26th in yards and 30th and 24th in points while he was in charge.
Davis is only the second known interview the Eagles have completed for defensive coordinator. New York Giants linebackers coach Jim Herrmann met with the Eagles more than a week ago but ultimately withdrew his name from consideration.
The Eagles have not confirmed assistant coaching interviews and are waiting until new coach Chip Kelly finalizes his staff before they announce any hires. Several positions reportedly have been filled.
Because Kelly has taken his time finding a coordinator, some believe he is waiting to snatch up one of the assistant coaches in the Super Bowl. The Eagles are interested in Ravens linebackers coach Ted Monachino, according to league sources, but Baltimore could block them from hiring him.
Monachino, 46, does not have experience as a coordinator at the NFL or college level. He was the defensive line coach in Jacksonville (2005-09) before going to Baltimore in 2010.
The Eagles also could have interest in a number of other candidates from Super Bowl teams. 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell, a former NFL coordinator with Green Bay and Atlanta, has been the name most mentioned. But the Eagles aren't very interested in Donatell, according to sources.
It is possible that Kelly is still eyeing a coach from the collegiate level. The Eagles were interested in Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, but he was hired by the Seahawks. They were also reportedly after Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, but nothing has materialized yet.
The common theme with many of the coaches linked to the Eagles is that they work in 3-4 schemes. Kelly prefers an odd-man front, sources have said.
Trainer gets promotion
The Eagles promoted Chris Peduzzi to head athletic trainer. He replaces Rick Burkholder, who followed Andy Reid to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month. Peduzzi was an assistant athletic trainer with the Eagles for 14 seasons.
Herremans surgery
Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans confirmed that he recently underwent surgery on his right foot but said the surgery did not have anything to do with the dislocated cuboid bone that halted his season in November.
Herremans explained that he had an infection that required surgery, and that it was not serious.
"It's a sliver I got in my foot a year ago," said Herremans, who won the Good Guy award at Monday's Philadelphia Sports Writers Association banquet. "It's been in there bothering me. It gets infected, and then I take antibiotics and it goes away and then it comes back. It doesn't have anything do with my injury from the season."
