The Eagles have extended the contract of general manager Tom Heckert through 2011 and named Howie Roseman vice president of player personnel.

Heckert, in his eighth season with the Eagles, has been the general manager since 2006 after serving as the vice president of player personnel and the previously director of player personnel.

“I feel we have strengthened our personnel staff today by extending Tom’s contract and by promoting Howie Roseman,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “Tom’s leadership and work ethic has continued to impress me over the years. Tom has also done a great job of nurturing and incorporating Howie’s talent into the personnel side of the organization. Howie has demonstrated a sharp eye for talent evaluation along with a knack for creative draft and free agent strategies. Both Tom and I feel Howie will be an excellent addition to the Philadelphia Eagles personnel staff.”

Roseman replaces Jason Licht, who was recently fired.

Roseman, formerly the team’s vice president of football administration, is in his ninth year with the Eagles. He joined the team in 2000 as salary cap/staff counsel. He was elevated to director of football administration in 2003 and to vice president of football administration in 2006.

Roseman will manage the college scouting staff, organize and run draft meetings, and scout the top college prospects. He also will help Reid and Heckert in evaluations of roster moves and free agency.

The Eagles presumably will hire a replacement for Roseman’s role in the football administration.

In other Eagles-related news, looks like much-maligned former first-round pick Freddie Mitchell had a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens yesterday. Mitchell has been out of football since 2005. Amazing to look at those stats: Five touchdowns in four years ... Here is the report.

It makes sense to extend Heckert's contract, he saves the team millions by not going after really good offensive players, and not only saving as far as their salaries go, but not having to pay those post season bonuses. A true business genius!

About The Daily News' Eagles Blog
Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his 27 years at the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo came to the Daily News from the Fort Worth (Tx.) Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually wa s boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose two sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad and very dangerous to be around following a Sooner loss, have been married 29 years and have raised 2 terrific daughters – Allison, 26, a lawyer and graduate of Boston University School of Law; and Amy, 23, who graduated from Clemson and works in marketing and sales for a professional baseball team.
