Man shot, cop injured, in North Philly fight

Two men and a 24th District police officer were injured during a confrontation in Port Richmond this afternoon that included a car accident and struggle over an officer's gun, authorities said. One of the men was shot in the stomach.

Police said they were responding to a call about a man with a gun when two patrol officers encountered two men in the 2900 block of Salmon Street, near Clearfield Street.

A chase ensued, with the men fleeing in a red SUV that crashed into a tree a few blocks away, authorities said.

The driver of the vehicle suffered a head injury, and the passenger, who tried to flee, was involved with a physical confrontation with one of the officers.

During the struggle, the passenger tried to get the officer's gun, causing the clip to dislodge and bullets to spill to the ground, said Lt. Frank Vanore, spokesman for the Philadelphia Police Department.

At least one bullet remained in the officer's 9mm Glock, which fired, striking the man in the stomach, police said.

The conditions of the men, who were taken to nearby hospitals, were not immediately available.

One officer involved in incident also suffered a leg injury, possibly a twisted knee, police said.

The struggle happened in the same area where a 24th District officer was killed in May during the pursuit of several bank robbers.
