At the Crown Point Truck Stop in Thorofare, where Route 130 runs concurrent with Interstate 295, cars were backed up four deep waiting to fill-up at $2.89 for a gallon of regular.
Bobby Stavola of Williamstown said he couldn't believe his eyes as he approached the station.
"I saw the price and said 'Holy Cow!" Stavola said as a pump jockey filled his Volkswagen Passat. "On Monday it was $3.09."
Also appreciating the price break was James Owens, who owns the Diamond Cut Janitorial Service in West Deptford.
"This is helping me out a lot," Owens said as a station attendant topped off his 2002 Dodge Ram. "My fuel costs have almost doubled this year. So I need all the help I can get."
Gas prices may continue to tumble through Thanksgiving, said Cathy Rossi, a spokesperson for AAA MidAtlantic.
A number of factors has caused the price of regular to fall 15 cents per gallon across the country during the last week, Rossi said.
"It's partly due to the sharp sell-off in oil and a drop in the wholesale price of gas," Rossi said. "There's also been a significant strengthening of the dollar. Demand also has fallen in the U.S. compared to a year ago."
The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular today is $3.48, down 18 percent from mid-July's high of $4.14.
AAA is predicting the national average could fall as low as $3 by Thanksgiving.
At the Crown Point Truck Stop, a cashier said the price cuts will be more immediate.
"It'll probably go down again by Thursday," said Crown Point cashier Ken Flaville. "We're expecting it to go as low as $2.75."
Flaville said motorists, many with out-of-state plates, were being drawn to the station's two pumps.
"They see the signs out front, fill up, and immediately get on their cellphones to tell their friends," he said. "The next thing you know, we're packed."
New Jersey routinely has some of the lowest gas prices in the nation, and stations in South Jersey lead the pack with rock bottom prices. According to the website Gasbuddy.com, only Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa have cheaper gas.
The Thorofare truckstop has the cheapest gas in the Garden State, according to Gasbuddy.com, followed by a Gulf station in Collingswood at Route 130 and Eldridge Road and another Gulf in West Collingswood at Crescent Blvd and Harrison Ave. where it was selling at $2.91. The average price of a gallon in New Jersey hovers at about $3.13, according to the website.
In Pennsylvania, the least expensive gas was in Manheim, Lancaster County where it was selling for $2.97. The average price in the Keystone State remains at over $3.42.
