Waiting for Hanna

Get that umbrella out!

As the Philadelphia region braces for Tropical Storm Hanna, an AccuWeather Service spokesman said the heavy rainfall would start this afternoon.

"The rains could start momentarily," said Dave Samuhel, a metereologist for AccuWeather who is based in State College, just after noon today.

"It looks like Hanna will slide just to the south of Philadelphia," he said, "but we're definitely going to have some heavy downpour throughout this afternoon."

Samuhel said he expected approximately two inches of rain to fall, with the heaviest to hit the western suburbs.

The projected rain is less than the 2-4 inches originally expected.

Samuhel said although Hanna was still following the same track, its heaviest rains were displaced from the center of the storm. He said this was part of the reason for the delay and lessened amount of rain for the region.

"It's been raining most of of the day in western Pennsylvania," he said, "including State College."

Lee Robertson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Mount Holly office, said most of New Jersey could experience winds of more than 35 mph, with wind gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph.

Hanna was expected to impact the entire state before it moved on, with coastal areas getting the brunt of the storm.

Last night AccuWeather reported that Hanna would race up the Interstate 95 corridor today after making landfall overnight in the Carolinas. It would bring with it heavy rain and damaging winds to the major cities from Richmond to Boston.

Another tropical storm, Hurricane Ike, was close behind, and expected to reach the Bahamas by tomorrow. AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reported today that Ike remained a major hurricane this morning as it moved west to southwest, more than 200 miles east-northeast of Grand Turk Island. The Category 3 hurricane has sustained winds of 115 mph.

Hanna is forecast to make landfall overnight along the Carolina coast between Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C.

According to AccuWeather.com expert senior meteorologist John Kocet, "This storm will do some damage, much like winter nor'easters that are even more powerful."

He said the combination of wind and rain will cause problems for motorists and could lead to flight delays at the major airports along the Eastern Seaboard. The highest wind gusts will be on the beaches and areas just to the east of the storm center.
