Three Ocean City beaches were closed today after two syringes were found on a three-block stretch of sand, but authorities said the needles appear to be unrelated to those found in Avalon earlier this week.
The syringes are of a different make than the type that washed up on Avalon's beaches, said Peter Aseltine, a spokesman for the state Attorney General's office, which is investigating the source of the debris found in Avalon.
The 38th, 39th and 40th Street beaches in Ocean City have been cleaned, but will stay closed for the rest of the day, officials said. They are expected to reopen tomorrow if no more debris is found.
The state Attorney General's office is investigating the source of the medical debris that has turned up in the water off Avalon's beaches in recent days. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone who was responsible for the pollution.
The beaches in Avalon have been closed three times since Saturday, when between 100 and 200 syringes washed up on the sand, along with gauze and other medical supplies. The waste reappeared again on Sunday and Tuesday, prompting the closings.
The Avalon beaches have been open since yesterday, and a city spokesman said today that a thorough sweep of the sands this morning yielded nothing.
